Full Version: How do you guys do it?

Seeing Kazinsal's recent post, he's right, disco becomes a chore after a while. All the fun drains away and all thats left is an obligation to stay active for your faction or your reputation. I look at people like Jinx, Exile, Panzer and a few others and I can't get my head around how you guys have kept your activity up so high for the past eternity.

I just want to ask any of those people who's on at least three times a week, foruming or pew pewing, does it feel like a chore to you?
Vogel
Sometimes yeah. Between dancing on egg shells with rules, to dealing with forum/skype drama that inevitably crops up, pretty much. Unless you keep yourself 100% isolated and play nothing but indies, you'll always run into stuff that gives you the "chore" feeling. Trading gives you that feeling, provided you still need to do it. Repping gives you that feeling, which tends to be every time you make a character. And so on and so forth.

I've only coped so far by having a bonified Freelancer character who doesn't suffer drama consequences, and opening up an endless search for a group or faction I can make. Thus far virtually none have come through, thanks to server rules, drama, people pulling strings, lack of support, sometimes all of these things at once. When that happens I blow off steam by not playing this game, then ease back into playing my Freelancer character and go about my business.
jammi
Jinx does it by being confusing and defending absolutely everything and anything.

XFire says that I have played 940 Hours of Freelancer. I am longer on Disco than having XFire and I still can't and wont stop playing.

lol ditto (same)

I joined in September '07. That's 3 years soon. I've been taking breaks from Freelancer constantly due to real life, and y'know what happens when I do so? I start to miss this place. 'Cause as many lolwutters there may be, there are still good people, some that joined whilst I was away, there is still more RP than anywhere else. It's like Disco pushes the F5 button to refresh every now and then. Everytime I return to it I find new stuff.

Now to answer your question: No. I think I check the Disco forums almost daily. I'll never get bored of this place. My trick is that I never check the forums because I have to. I only check it out when I feel like, thusly I do it almost on a daily basis. tongue.gif

My second trick is to drink lol.gif ... I always think Disco is fun when I've had a couple of shots.
Hot Rod
It depends really.

Some people become good at PvP, and for them it's a constant sort of challenge to fight, to kill and to win. Since these guys will win more than they lose, but still lose enough to motivate them, a long span of interest is guaranteed.

Some people make a close group of friends, and start all their RPs within the given group. This has a great advantage of you knowing the people with whom yer RPing, and you can give it direction without much chance of a random screw up. Also, you can bypass the lolwat problem tongue.gif

Some people maintain a ****load of characters. Where-ever the action is, they will get there because they practically have a char 2 systems away lol.gif

And of course, some people like running and maintaining things, and making sure plans go ahead, and work out. Human nature likes the solving of problems y'know, and some people like the leadership.
The Outlaw Star
No it feels like fun!! Iam on everyday and have been for the last 2 1/2 years ( second forum acc. forgot old password). i may only get on for a few mins some days but still i have to see space at least once a day smile.gif people do complain alot but awell that life it will never stop. if you feel like you are playing bc you have to ( for rep, your name, for faction, whatever) well....i would just stop playing. Iam In IMG be i love It because i enjoy all the great ppl and the constant harassment of the Outcast. if you dont have pashion for your faction then its not for you.

Pvp is fun but should never be your main focus and if you cant RP then at least try. If you dont like to RP or dont want to then this place is not for you.

I find making A LOT OF MONEY " FAST" and then blowing it all on new ships keeps me interested and on my RP game.

Works for me . . .
OMG Ivan!
I push the stories forward to make it interesting for myself. I tackle it like a job and give myself responsibilities.

But everyone knows I believe that discovery shouldn't be pure "fun" but also a dose of responsiblity.
Clover
for me its quite easy - RP something regular - nothing "special" in terms of abilities, demands or anything.

special things - special factions - special whatever wears off as quickly as it comes. i don t develop characters with superhuman abilities nor claims.

and all in all, i think i m playing computer games as much as the average person - which is around 30 - 60 min / day activly.

using freelancer as a basis for a good chat - or RL distraction. in other words - take it easy. log in the pirate - hit one trader - be happy, log out again.

play factions that are exciting by default - zoners never get boring, there is always someone trying to attack the faction verbally in RP or oo RP - and seeing all the attacks on the faction during the past months / years is quite funny. - gaians - the underdog - so much that i still pirate the old fashioned way ...

and a few more pvp orientated chars which are nice for a quick battle. - diversity without overdoing it. - and avoiding the great disappointments ( like leading a faction that fails ) - as a matter of fact - avoiding most responsibility at all works quite fine.
'Mike'
I have a molly!

thats all I need to have fun, even tough there are lots of lollers around,
better a bad day on disco then a good day at the office.

also I?ve clocked around 1890 hours of disco with Xfire
Tomtomrawr
Disco has felt like a chore to me for months. I just have nothing better to do, so I just play it even more and am always on the forums.

As soon as Exodus is ready I'll be trying that anyway.

Edit: Roger is the only character that really keeps me playing Disco. Maybe Walter aswell.

Ashes
I don't really play for the game so much any more. I find it boring to log on by myself and do stuff, so I mostly log on with a friend whenever they wanna go out and do stuff.

That's what it's all about isn't it? Having fun with your friends.

Aye.

I get in-game when I have the chance. Sometimes i find it boring, but hey - expect it when you become a veteran XD
Coin
when it becomes a chore, do what i do:

set a calender event on computer to log in and reset clock on all chars
back up all account codes
save a handwritten copy of the account codes in the freelancer cd case
(can you tell ive lost characters before?)

and then ignore freelancer for a while.

we'll be here, waiting for you. sharpening our pvp skills. refining role play (or server politics as it should be known), so that when you come back, its like a different world. one time i left, there was SA ships in NY. now every one is more factionalised, and npc ships can really HURT. and wars. and new houses. and new stuff.

basically, if your getting bored of freelancer, you need to start a new character, and read threads like the context thread, and the comic spam thread.

this is a game. it should be fun. if its not fun, your not doing it right. if your not doing it right, then im afraid that you just lost the game.

Sovereign
I ignore the drama and only play when cool stuff is happening. As such, the factions I've stayed in are not based on their everyday droll and patrols, but on the crazy epic stuff they get into. Like Thresherswarms, or Gallia.

The rest of the time, I do other stuff. I pick and choose the enjoyable stuff, even if I fix potential unfun-ness when I can.
Capt_MacCello
I started playing Disco one week ago, so I'm still not having any problems. But even if was, I'm very, VERY carefree. ;D

But I agree with Coin completely. It's a game, and about all, you must have fun. So if I login, stay 5 minutes on and don't get excited or in the mood to play, I log off and go eat something, or take my dog for a walk, or anything else with anyone avaiable. And when I'm not at my girlfriend's house (or she's here) and I'm home at night and don't want to sleep, I log in. If I'm not into flying around, I go to NY, stand still or dock, and roleplay till sleep comes =P

The key is diversity (with anything in life, really). Find things to do and you shall never get bored. Stand still and you get tortured to death by boredom XD

In reality i cut all ties of responsibility and only play when in the mood & time allows.
Third anniversary on the server has come and gone, third forum anniversary is up soon.

i only been on for afew weeks now

trust me the ultra steep disco learning curve will keep you busy for quite some time...i still havent learned how to decently pew pew yet

the rp takes awhile to get the hang of
Capt_MacCello
I got the RP in less than a day oO

Three days after I entered I was already participating in a RP event in NY with a derelict ship (have to write a report ob that btw..)

Nope, it doesn't feel like a chore.
It feels like relaxing after a work day, or before a work day. Or simply relaxing and having fun most of the time.

Well, you see, I run a few factions and actually have some responsibility instead of just PvPwhoring all day long. One of which factions requires me to be nice while I'm active in it.

Nope. Because I'm not as involved here as people would like to think I am.

Distance is the key. The second you really start to care to the point that it makes an honest effect on your emotional state, that's when it becomes boring, tiresome, difficult...
Dennis Jameson
The key lies in balancing the work you put in with the rewards you reap. Once the rewards are greater than the time you put in you can truly call yourself a winner at this game.
Optimusjamie Prime
I consider myself a winner because I get fun out of Disco. Even when overpowered Nomad NPCs are tearing apart my Spatial, I am, at heart, messing about in space.

Neither. I manage my faction(s), I enjoy flying and that's all. The occasional "legal battle" or discussion, but what do they matter? Just keep me sharp. Not like it matters anyway in the end, it's a game.

People need to chill out and just enjoy this game. Those who leave for reasons like ; this place sucks, full of haters, can't take it anymore etc go and look for such things if you ask me. I don't look for bull, and I don't it anywhere.

...I kid, I kid. I don't. That's why I've "left". Well, ingame at least. The only reason I haven't left completely is because some people here are nice and 'cause I've done enough to not want to abandon.
