A good morrow to you, Lords and Ladies of Sirius,

My name is Deeyem Dydax. I'm an avid explorer and independent trader-turned-entrepreneur, but most importantly, I'm the creator of...
"Depots & Dreadnoughts"

...the exciting new holo-top role-playing game. However, I need playtesters, so I'm putting out a call to any daring heroes across the galaxy interested in adventure.

You may ask, "What is roleplay?" I know this is an alien concept to many Sirians. When you roleplay, you step outside of yourself and assume the role of a character from your own limitless imagination! The storyline progresses through the guidance of the Depot Master and actions of its players.

The game is set in Suiris, a magical place not unlike our own, filled with barghests, basilisks, gladiators, liches, marauders, paladins, pilgrims, skeletons, titans, werewolves, wights, wyrms, and more. You can use your powers to bend space and time to effortlessly traverse the galaxy, magically slide through a battle to evade all attacks, or moor your supertransport within the extradimensional space of a small station. Through roleplay, you can be whoever you want, go wherever you want, and do whatever you want, all from the safety of your own ship.

What will you be?

The dashing bounty hunter, swooping into the midst of the fray, smirking and musing, "Well, well," before ripping into their prey with lightning speed, their lethal reflexes destroying the target before they can even open their mouth to scream?

The brooding pirate, on a bloody quest for revenge against the unfathomably evil Navy who singled out their parents for murder and left them orphaned, but who also slaughters hapless traders along the way themselves?

The stalwart admiral, a preteen strategic prodigy confidently commanding the crew on the bridge of their own battleship, its hull tempered by the blaster fire of countless foes, and with the tactical prowess to decisively crush enemies already engaged in battle?

The grizzled miner, their gnarled wrist and calloused trigger finger tirelessly blasting through rocks in search of immense riches that wax and wane mysteriously, never certain of the value and demand for his precious ores?

The human-animal hybrid genetic experiment, escaped from a secret government laboratory and seeking employment as a mercenary fighter ace, constantly in search of the most deadly harmony of ships and weapons, and preferring to spend most of their lives training in simulated combat against opponents?

The enigmatic infected, speaking only in maddening riddles whilst harboring the insidious seed of some unspeakable eldritch horror from the far reaches of the galaxy, and whose tenebrous motives they are intimately familiar with?

The wandering Zoner, peacefully traversing the systems at the helm of a fortified and heavily-armed colony ship in search of a permanent home to call their own?

The crafty trader, expertly casting forth scrying scanners far across the galaxy and cunningly climbing to incredible heights to stealthily slip past all obstacles?

The otherworldly loremaster, a strange visitor from a foreign galaxy, possessing volumes of cryptic ancient tales detailing secret sleeper ships from the long-lost ancestral home of Los and knowledge of incredible technology never before seen in Suiris?

You can be all these...and more!

Who can join?

Right now, any neutral Freelancers, meaning not taking sides with any organization or breaking any laws, including flying vessels that may be deemed illegal in a house. However, any profession within that is welcome. It might be nice to have some capable combat-oriented people to deter jerks who want to interrupt our campaign. Traders who can bring extra snacks and drinks are great too.

The [D&D] designation indicates you are a roleplayer involved in Depots & Dreadnoughts, but I know you all have your regular day jobs. Just don't get anyone angry at us.

My biggest concern is that the logistics and stuff of arranging people from different organizations all over Sirius is too hard. You don't want to have Admiral That Guy showing up late to the session in a Liberty Carrier and getting into a fight with the Landwirtrechtbewegung in a Sense bomber because he decided to eat their last tube of cheesy Synth paste without at least bringing a pack of Liberty ale to share. This kills the immersion and is uncool all around.

What are our goals?

Test out the Depots & Dreadnoughts game system and campaign setting. See what works and what doesn't, come up with new features, balance mechanics, etc.

Spread the message of Depots & Dreadnoughts to expand the community and opportunities for roleplay.

Pool our resources and try to do some Space-Action Role Play (SARP) where we actually go around the galaxy and act out our characters. For example, Serenity transports and refurbished liners can stand in for capital ships when acting out a battle between Outcasts and Corsairs in the Omicrons. We might equip only mining lasers for safety!

Set up a forum on the neural net where players everywhere can get together and discuss all sorts of topics, both in the game and our real lives in Sirius. I envision it as a friendly place where all ideas are valued and we can engage in intelligent discourse.

Give players the opportunity to become Depot Masters themselves, should they so desire, empowering them with the ability to direct the storyline and action.

Most importantly, have fun!

Where will we go?

Right now I'll be transmitting on short-wave from the cargo hold of my parents' freighter, which is moored at Barrier Gate Station, Coronado, but if anyone has connections so we can host it at some Freeports and rotate around or something, that would be great.

If my SARP idea ever takes off, we might go even farther!

What are our relations?

We're just here to roleplay, so we're currently NEUTRAL to everyone unless they have a problem with us.

What are the rules?

1. Not allowed in the Depots and Dreadnoughts network or session:

1.1 Use of abusive, vulgar, obscene, political, or racist materials
1.2 Trolling or harassing other members of the campaign
1.3 Advertising, especially commercial advertising, except advertising your own gaming uplinks or databanks
1.4 Adult content or links to it; This also includes any Kusari holo that is in any way graphic or pornographic
1.5 Libel, defamatory, threatening materials and any law-violating materials
1.6 Use of copyrighted material without the owner's permission
1.7 Metagaming* and/or powergaming** to gain a roleplay benefit for guilds, parties or adventurers

* Metagaming: When game information outside of what is available in a game is used to give a player an advantage in-game.
**Powergaming: When one character forces actions against another player without giving them the chance to respond, affecting and/or interfering with the other characters roleplay.

2. For rules regarding the actual gameplay stuff like "IDs", combat, bounty hunting, and building guild halls, please refer to the [PLAYER HANDBOOK]. It's a playtest, so everything is subject to change. Remember that even the powerful A.D.M.I.N.S. within the campaign setting have their own unique personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Please try to work things out in regular roleplay and avoid excessive use of divine S.A.N.C.T.IO.N.-class weapons.

4. Your characters are flying through space in actual ships with weaponry dealing balanced damage. There are no current plans for ground or station-board combat. No sawsword-wielding Zoner Marine zealots or Sparkle Guy power armor with railguns dealing ultradamage. Aliens, imports, characters from Glyphscape, and other Special Role Play (SRP) are subject to approval by me and must at least act in/as a spacecraft.

5. We are expected to form a cohesive group in roleplay The Depots & Dreadnoughts ingame ID and alliance system is tweaked to allow unorthodox combinations for the party. Don't be a jerk and have your character killing other party members. If the game community gets big enough, we may have separate guilds allying or fighting each other, but for now it's the party versus non-player characters (NPCs).

6. Everyone is expected to have their own probability simulation software installed on their shipboard computers to take their actions and the like. No borrowing and absolutely no counterfeit or modded stuff.

7. I recommend everyone grab some mini holosculptures from hobby shops on Planet Manhattan to represent your characters. I have extras if you don't mind your Valor being represented by a Stargazer. Keep in mind that storytelling - not mini holosculptures - is the focus and I won't be responsible for lost or damaged minis. This isn't Conflictmallet or ScuffleMech.

8. If we do end up SARPing, no intentionally damaging each others' hulls or attacking anyone outside the group not interested in our roleplay. The only exception is self defense if they prove dangerous in real life.

9. Be respectful of the laws and customs of wherever we roleplay.

10. Please bring enough snacks and drinks to share around with everyone. Don't be a mooch and show up to the session with a cargo hold full of oxygen.

11. I know academics and jobs can be time consuming in Sirius. Real life happens, whether you need to feed the crew of your base, write some journal entries, or need to trade and earn some credits. If you can't make it to a session, need to quit, or want to return from an absence, please let me know in advance.

Come join our quest!

OORP Stuff

Disclaimer
Obviously, this is far from a serious Sirius faction, but it will still adhere to the Discovery roleplay as Sirius civilians doing their own thing, roleplaying within the ingame game whatever tropes or madness they can think of within the roleplay confines of Discovery.

I literally wrote this up overnight and don't expect it to become too huge or intense, but I hope anyone joining can have some casual fun roleplaying a bunch of geeks either way. Because there is a LARP/"SARP" element, this can also involve roleplayed roleplay activities like convoys, races, exploration, etc. and signing up for any events of that sort in order to actually contribute to the larger server roleplay and avoid being overly lulzy. However, there are no (current) plans to become a mercenary company or the like as I'd rather not kill people over silly, possibly immersion-breaking premises.

Ingame gameplay
Currently, I have a rough "system" in mind, but it's up to the people signing up to agree on what will be the most fun - from an anarchistic "Calvinball" experience to turn-based actions with simple character sheets and numbers derived from FLStat. Since you can use any size dice ingame with "/dice #", we can make rolls to keep things random.

Sessions are consciously held at more remote bases to avoid spamming up high-traffic areas and subjecting others to our silly storytelling, like in front of Planet Manhattan.

As players
People are busy IRL - I know I am, so anyone within the faction is welcome to pick up and roleplay some roleplay at any time - ingame, on the forums, through Skype, whatever. I'll do my best to keep some regularity and roleplay a good Depot Master so you can have fun roleplaying while you're roleplaying.

It's a game within a game, open to everyone. You can leave your overt OORP conflicts at the door while still roleplaying passively-aggressively lampooning what goes on in Discovery. The point is to come together as players and make light of things.

Steal this idea!
Finally, you are absolutely welcome to adopt this concept and enact it with your own group. It would be cool to give Deeyem Dydax some credit inRP, but who knows? Maybe your characters are more into Conflictmallet, ScuffleMech, or Glyphscape. Maybe you're a weird cult with a tenuous grip on reality and who live their lives according to ancient scriptures derived from the networks of Sol with cat holovids, the Divine Voice of Khil, whatever.

If you've ever wanted to do play an RPG (even using sourcebooks from actual games - just avoid copyright) with other players in Discovery, you've got an avenue to do so, complete with dice rolls, live text chat, and (possibly) avatars in the form of your ships.
