Fuchs on Assignment

23 July, 823 A.S. ~ Bruchsal Base

"Unread: 1 (one Message)" displayed brightly on the Kommandant's personal terminal. Effective immediately, Alexander Fuchs was to act as the temporary station commander of Bielefeld Base in the Sigma-15 system, the usual commander being on medical leave for at least the next month. Usually in this situation, the base would continue operations on its own, acting upon the last standing orders the commander had put in place until their return. However, in the system known to the Bundschuh as Luneburg, a number of threats had risen recently. The entry of the Rheinwehr, the discovery of the Core, and the movement of the Zoners all posed a threat to the station's secrecy, and a temporary commander was required in order to lead patrols to keep the station safe from discovery at any cost.

Alexander frowned. He had gotten used to his position as a Kommandant aboard Bruchsal base, flying within the Taunusfeld and generally avoiding straying too close to any large amount of responsibility, behaviours that had arisen from his now well-honed skill of avoiding the Parteivorsitzende. This move would make Alexander considerably more visible in the eyes of the Parteivorsitzende and vulnerable to her wrath, as well as liable for the lives upon the station. However, orders were orders, and personal feelings were not important for this assignment.

Alexander moved from his personal quarters down to the hangar, where his trusty Wraith greeted him. While it was enamored with patchwork repairs accrued from its days of service, it was still the craft he preferred the most. He launched and set course for the Sigma-15 jump hole as the asteroid in which the Bundschuh made their home faded into the distance.

23 July, 823 A.S. ~ Sigma-15 System
The beauty of Luneburg (or Sigma-15) instantly flooded Alexander's cockpit as he jumped into the system. He was greeted by the sight of Freeport 8 in the distance, being illuminated by the two stars in their orange and yellow hues. Unfortunately, Freeport 8 was not his destination, Alexander turning his ship into the Scharhorn Asteroid field. The asteroid field was somewhat comforting, reminding him of the Taunusfeld in the system not too far away. The system, however, was missing the familiar sight of his birthplace Planet Holstein in the distance, replacing it with the sight of the now-hostile Hammersee. As he ventured deeper into the field, these sights now faded, and the seemingly-endless asteroids took their place.

Alexander though back to the last time he had been on a station other than Bruchsal for an extended period of time. He had been recovering from severe radiation poisoning on the now-destroyed Zwickau Depot in Dresden. The Aktivist responsible had been exiled, and as time went on Alexander had lost contact with the Aktivist, his new role as a Kommandant and the instability within the Vereinigte Widerstandsarmee taking control of any free time he may have once had. He had learnt many things from Sarah "Sparks" McFarlen, the basics of ship maintenance and the ability to relax after combat being among them.

The daydreams of his days of an Aktivist faded away as Bielefeld Base came into view. Like many Bundschuh facilities, this base was of haphazard construction, vaguely taking the form of an armoured depot. The computer announced his docking access, and he manoeuvred his Wraith into the base's mostly-bare hangar.
