[01/26/10] Ehvind: Most of them have easy shortcuts on the keyboard, though
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I normally don't use that menu very often, but you may have to until you learn the hotkeys
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Try to learn the hotkeys, it'll make things much easier
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): just like in Freelancer:P
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Yepyep
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I prefer starting with a completely clean scene
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Without a camera or lightsource or even a cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Those three things are in the scene by default
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You can always add them later, if you want
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): alright, let me change that
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Go into object mode again (hit Tab, it should say Object Mode in a menu below the 3d view
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit A until all three things are highlighted
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 'a' will highlight everything if nothing is highlighted, and if something is highlighted then it will unhighlight it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You'll be using it a lot
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To erase objects, hit 'x'
[01/26/10] Ehvind: A menu pops up, just click it
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): done
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To make this the default, we'll need to "Save Default Settings" from the File menu
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Oh wait
[01/26/10] Ehvind: May be a good idea to change the view and 3D cursor before we do that
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To rotate the view, hold in your middle mouse button (you have one, right?) and drag
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I also like changing to perspective view, it's probably in orthographic now
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To change that, make sure numlock is on and hit 5 on the numpad
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Things farther away are smaller, things closer are larger. It's usually easier to look at things that way
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Orthographic, where everything is the same size no matter what distance they are, can get confusing
[01/26/10] Ehvind: The other view hotkeys you should know are all on the numpad
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 7 changes to top view
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 1 to rear view (if you have the ship facing up in top view)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: and 3 to right side view
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): I think I have the right set up
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You will want to center the cursor if it isn't already in the middle
[01/26/10] Ehvind: It may be floating somewhere randomly
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit 7 and then click close to the middle
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That will move the 3D cursor close to the middle
[01/26/10] Ehvind: The 3D cursor is usually where everything is relative from
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If you scale or rotate something, it uses the cursor as pivot
[01/26/10] Ehvind: It's also where new things are added when you add them
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now it may look like it's in the middle, but it probably isn't
[01/26/10] Ehvind: It's important that it's aligned to the grid, otherwise things you make will be slightly offcenter
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That's very bad
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To snap it to the grid, hit Shift-S
[01/26/10] Ehvind: And click "Cursor -> Grid"
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now it's centered in top view, to make sure it's centered in 3D, you should hit 3 and repeat
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That's all pretty boring, but it's important
[01/26/10] Ehvind: File -> Save Default Settings when you're done, then we can start making stuff
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): alright
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Go to top view if you're not there already (7), and then hit spacebar
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That'll open a nice menu, many useful things can be found there, along with their hotkeys
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We want to add something now
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Add -> Mesh -> Cube
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): nice
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You should have a square now, if you rotate the view you'll see a cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: When you add something, it orients itself to your view
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If you're in top it will face up
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Normally, that's what you want
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If you add something while looking sideways, 3Dish, then the cube will be rotated and facing a strange direction
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You can use that to your advantage now and then, but you should probably not worry much about that yet
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Tab into edit mode
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Cube should highlight in pink, edges and vertexes in yellow
[01/26/10] Ehvind: In top view, zoom in until the cube is really big in the window
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Do you see yellow lines inside (behind) the cube?
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): yep
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You're in perspective mode, when you're editing your mesh, you should normally be in orthographic
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That way you can easily tell if things are the right size
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit 5 on the numpad
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now, let's change this cube a bit
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 'a' to deselect everything
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 'z' to make the cube transparent
[01/26/10] Ehvind: This lets you highlight vertexes through objects, which you will normally do
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We'll start by making the cube longer
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): lets do it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To do this, we'll drag the 4 (2 that we see, and 2 behind things) top vertexes
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We'll need to select them
[01/26/10] Ehvind: There are several ways of doing this
[01/26/10] Ehvind: One way is to right click each one while holding shift
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Do that to the two you can see, thenr otate the view a bit
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Chances are that you actually selected one of the vertexes behind instead of the two on top
[01/26/10] Ehvind: In any case, do that to all 4
[01/26/10] Ehvind: When all 4 are selected, the edges between them and the face between them should highlight
[01/26/10] Ehvind: There is probably some axis thing in the middle of all the 4 vertexes
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That can be used to drag and manipulate what you have selected
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I prefer to use hotkeys instead, because it's easier in my opinion
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To hide it, click the finger thing next to the word "Global" and a few shapes
[01/26/10] Ehvind: When you've done that, go back to top view (7)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You should see the square again, top edge highlighted
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To drag the verts, you'll have to see where you're dragging it to
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We should do a few things now
[01/26/10] Ehvind: First of all, make sure your mouse is inthe 3d view (not the panel below) and hit ctrl+up
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To make the panel below come back hit ctrol+up again
[01/26/10] Ehvind: With hotkeys, you don't need that panel much, and it uses up a lot of space
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We should drag the view a little too, so we can see more of what's above the cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: shift+middle mouse button and drag
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Should be very simple
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Sometimes it glitches, though and instead moves whatever you have selected
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If it did that, hit ctrl-z to undo
[01/26/10] Ehvind: (shift-ctrl-z redos, by the way)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Okay, to move the verts, finally
[01/26/10] Ehvind: In top view, hit G (think grab)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now the verts will move when you move your mouse
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Click to finalize the move
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Esc to cancel
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): aha, I get it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: There's a problem with this
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now you've probably moved it, but it isn't aligned with the grid anymore
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Not perfectly, at least, and it needs to be perfect
[01/26/10] Ehvind: There's a magnet button on the lower header thing, that will make it so that it snaps while you hold ctrl
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That's a pain, in my opinion, I like to turn on the feature that makes it snap all the time, EXCEPT when I hold ctrl
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Because I almost always want it to snap
[01/26/10] Ehvind: This is very simple, but it's not easy to find if you don't know
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I was very surprised when I found out where they hid the preferences
[01/26/10] Ehvind: The top menu toolbar is actually not a toolbar
[01/26/10] Ehvind: It's a panel, it's just very thin
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Move your mouse to the lower border of the menu and drag it down
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Then preferences should peek out
[01/26/10] Ehvind: In View & Controls, there's a section called "Snap to grid"
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Click all three of them, grab/move, rotate and scale
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): should snap now I guess
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Great
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Have you changed your cube or is it still a cube?
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): are you sure it will snap though
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Is the magnet putton pushed in?
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): yeah
[01/26/10] Ehvind: It shouldn't be
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That'll turn off the snapping
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): ahh, much better now
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Awesome
[01/26/10] Ehvind: The thing with snapping is that it doesn't actually snap to the grid you see
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If you move something away from the grid, and it's not aligned anymore
[01/26/10] Ehvind: And then try to move it back to the grid with snap on, it will snap based on an invisible grid based on where it was when you started dragging it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: So if you move it slightly below and to the left of a grid square and then try to snap it back, it will use a grid that's offset slightly down and to the left
[01/26/10] Ehvind: To get it back to the visible grid, select what you want snapped and hit shift-c
[01/26/10] Ehvind: "Selection -> grid"
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That will snap all the vertexes you have selected to the grid point closest to it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Be aware, though, that each vert will behave independently
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You may have to adjust it yourself manually to make sure verts are aligned after you do it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Sometimes it's easier to undo
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now, for example, it may be easier to delete your cube and create a new one
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Because that's very easy
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit a until everything is selected, then x
[01/26/10] Ehvind: then make sure the cursor is centered in the middle of the grid (there is probably a pinkish dot there too now, that's the object center), snap it with shift-c (cursor -> grid), space -> add -> mesh -> cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Ah right, the erase menu is a little longer in edit mode
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Vertices is usually what you want to do
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That will erase all the verts as well as the edges and faces connected to them
[01/26/10] Ehvind: The rest are self-explanatory or easy enough to find out once you need them, edge loop can wait
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Let me know when you have a fresh cube
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): ok, fresh cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: let's try an easier way of selecting many verts that are overlapping
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit b once
[01/26/10] Ehvind: that will make the cursor a crosshair thing
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That's your standard box selection tool
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit b again and you'll get a circle, use your scroll wheel to make it bigger and smaller
[01/26/10] Ehvind: with that circle, when you click (or click and drag) it will select all the verts inside the circle
[01/26/10] Ehvind: if you middle click (or middleclick and drag) it will deselect
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I love using that circle select, it's very quick and easy
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit esc to cancel, as usual
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select to the top two verts with the circle select (it wil select the ones underneath too if the cube is transparent, hit z if it isn't)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: zoom out (or in) until the cube has 4 grid squares inside it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: When you zoom, the grid changes scale, which changes how much it snaps
[01/26/10] Ehvind: If you click the view menu in the lower left, orthographic should be checked
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): alright, that's done
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Drag the top of the cube up so that it's 10 squares long
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That should be one square below the thick 10x10 grid line
[01/26/10] Ehvind: (since the cube is centered on the origin, with the lower edge one square down)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit a twice, to select all of it
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit g and drag the entire thing up one notch, so it's resting on the axis
[01/26/10] Ehvind: the red axis
[01/26/10] Ehvind: x is red, y is green, z is blue, by the way
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): ok
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Let's decide that this cube thing we have now is the nose of the fighter we're making
[01/26/10] Ehvind: well, not really a cube anymore
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now let's add a new section just behind this nose
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Engine housing, maybe
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit a to deselect
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select the bottom face of the nose
[01/26/10] Ehvind: that is, the 4 vertexes at the bottom, so the same thing we did to the top before
[01/26/10] Ehvind: What we're going to do now is extrude this face
[01/26/10] Ehvind: this essentially creates a new section in our mesh
[01/26/10] Ehvind: to do that, hit 'e'
[01/26/10] Ehvind: and select region
[01/26/10] Ehvind: drag it down maybe 2 squares, so it's a nice cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now we should make this bigger, since it needs to fit the engine and cargo and whatnot
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select the new cube section
[01/26/10] Ehvind: so all the vertexes except the ones at the very top
[01/26/10] Ehvind: shift-c, cursor -> selection
[01/26/10] Ehvind: This will move the 3d cursor to the middle of the cube
[01/26/10] Ehvind: We're going to scale it out now
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): done
[01/26/10] Ehvind: So we want it to scale from the middle of itself
[01/26/10] Ehvind: hit 's' (scale) and drag out
[01/26/10] Ehvind: look in the lower left it should say how much we're scaling
[01/26/10] Ehvind: scale it to 3
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now the cube is bigger (3x bigger) and front of the nose is still small
[01/26/10] Ehvind: a cone-like nose
[01/26/10] Ehvind: This looks a bit strange, though. Most ships aren't cubes.
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Let's make it a little more flat
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Hit 3 and you'll see it from the right side
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): looks like a flashlight
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Yea, should be a big square on the left, a trapezoid on the left, big to small
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Let's move the lower edge of the engine housing (the big cube) up a bit
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select the lower edges of it and drag it up a notch
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Now I would probably first move the front of the nose closer
[01/26/10] Ehvind: maybe -5 squares
[01/26/10] Ehvind: it'll look very chubby, so we can extend the nose again, with extrude
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select the front of the nose and hit e
[01/26/10] Ehvind: region
[01/26/10] Ehvind: drag out
[01/26/10] Ehvind: 8 squares maybe
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Looking a little better, but the nose should probably get thinner toward the front
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Zoom in on the front until the smaller grid squares come up
[01/26/10] Ehvind: select to the top of the nose and drag them down a bit
[01/26/10] Ehvind: same with the bottom, perhaps
[01/26/10] Ehvind: You could drag the top or bottom backwards or forwards a bit too
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Might look cool
[01/26/10] Ehvind: That looks like it could turn into something, yea?
[01/26/10] Ehvind: (at least from the side)
[01/26/10] Ehvind: go back to top view to make the nose a little wider, perhaps
[01/26/10] Ehvind: the middle section there, where it gets thin
[01/26/10] Ehvind: I would drag the sides of that out a bit to make it thicker
[01/26/10] Ehvind: After that we could make a cockpit
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Let me know when you've gotten this far
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): just taking my time to make it look decent
[01/26/10] Ehvind: Haha, go for it
[01/26/10] Ilya (Crucial): oh, I'm done now

I omitted most of my responses. If you have Blender open, read this wall of text and follow Ehvind's instruction's. That will teach you how to make practically any shape you want:nyam:
P.S. Don't mind Ehvind's grammar, or he will be upset

[9:50:01 PM] Frankie(aznremix416): anyone here good at physics?
[9:50:49 PM] Matt (Goa.Revival): I'll give it a shot.
[9:51:23 PM | Edited 9:51:33 PM] Frankie(aznremix416): an amusement park ride has a frequency of 0.05 Hz. What is the ride's period
[9:51:37 PM] Chris (Sovereign): mechanics or EM?
[9:51:49 PM] Chris (Sovereign): F = 1/T
[9:51:52 PM] Agmen (Carl): once a month, during the lunar cycle, when all the other amusement park rides have their periods
[9:51:57 PM] Chris (Sovereign): so 1/.05
[9:52:00 PM] Chris (Sovereign): should be 20
[9:52:03 PM] Frankie(aznremix416): ...
[9:52:13 PM] Frankie(aznremix416): thisi is serious, i got a test tomorrow
[9:52:43 PM] Matt Alvarez: Ha. So you have a frequency of 0.05 Hz which is the same as 0.05 cycles per second.
[9:52:45 PM] Agmen (Carl): If you don't think it's serious when a ride is on it's period, then you're not married... :)

And some people forget which chat they're in...

[9:55:02 PM] Chris (Sovereign): been working on programming, and finishing up the Maquis doc since someone thinks they deserve to come and take over
[9:55:33 PM] Chris (Sovereign): whoa, this is the BHG chat...
[9:55:42 PM] Chris (Sovereign): I was wondering when we got Agmen into the RM
