Today's update: Alternate Styles

So today's update isn't particularly a flashy one, but rather something we're going to be doing to make sure players have more variety in their ship choices without horribly mucking with balance.

The above ship is the SCDF's Leander-class Frigate, the class that is slowly being replaced in service by the Anzac. Naturally, an entire fleet of perfectly functional warships isn't replaced with new, expensive ones overnight. That would be silly. So we're giving players the opportunity in situations like these to be able to choose different models with the same stats and balance factors for the same ship. These ships are -- if not outright the same model with different colour schemes and banners -- similar in size and surface area for balance and logic purposes, but with varying styles available to give a unique, realistic flair to the universe.

Another instance of this will be able to be found in the Performance Aerospace PR-24 Stallion racing interceptor featured a few posts back. A player who purchases the PR-24 in one livery will be able to switch liveries at shipyards and orbital spacedocks that have those liveries available -- for example, the SCDF livery would be available at a military shipyard, and the New South Wales livery wouldn't be able to be painted on in the Victoria colony.

How far are we going to go with this? I honestly can't say. It depends on how much spare time we have between now and the closed beta. Thankfully these aren't major game changers and can be implemented in regular patches, giving you more opportunities and ways to shape your little corner of the Pleiades the way you want to.

Thanks for tuning into another Broken Bonds development update!

Today's update: Tullamarine Space Port

Today's update is mostly composed of black pixels, because lighting and glowmapping are cool.

Meet Tullamarine Space Port, the last stop and border checkpoint before leaving the Southern Cross Commonwealth for Medicea via the Beta system. This glorious station is perfect for having your visa processed, waiting for your visa to be processed, spending the night at because they're having a hard time verifying that your visa actually belongs to you, spending another night at because they lost your visa in all the commotion, and finally, everything's all in order, have a good trip, mate!

Welcome to the Victoria system, where layovers are a natural occurrence. The station is the first station we've (or, more accurately, Captain Morgan has) built in-game using the new Commonwealth modular station parts. We're hoping to have plenty more en route as well -- but we'll only show ones that look significantly different, and use different parts and cores. Can't spoil the whole game, now can we?

Thanks for tuning into another Broken Bonds development update! Tomorrow's mini-update (only on brokenbonds.net): the launcher.

Today's update: Faster-than-Light Travel - Intrasystem

Kaz posted this to the thread on the BB forums, but didn't copy it over to here. So, here it is. We hope you enjoy it!

Tonight on Broken Bonds Development Update Megathread: Extreme Edition, we'll be discussing faster-than-light travel throughout solar systems. I know we said we'd be covering the launcher today, but this is cooler.

Shortly after settlement of Planet Sydney, the Southern Cross Commonwealth, in need of a fast way to travel between notable locations and fixed installations in a solar system, developed gravity slingshots. Colloquially called "spaceways", these physics-bending devices propel ships at faster-than-light speeds from one point to another, with a series of checkpoint rings in the middle to help stabilize the "tunnel" through which a ship riding the spaceways travels. Holographically-projected signs accompany the primary entry points of spaceways to help direct pilots along mapped-out routes, such as the Great Victoria Loop.

The Medicean scientists, however, had a different breakthrough. The Sistema di Transito Rapido Alcubierriano, more commonly called the SITRALC, is a set of rings, much like those that stabilize Commonwealth spaceways, based around the premise of the Alcubierre metric, by which a "bubble" forms around a travelling ship that compresses the space in front of it and expands the space behind it to effectively surpass the speed of light without technically needing to exceed the speed of light. The result is a fast, efficient method of travel along a straight path. The SITRALC is, like the spaceway system, numbered and mapped. Unlike the spaceways, however, the SITRALC has much faster Legion-exclusive travel paths in addition to the standard-velocity lanes, and requires a larger body to support the generators required to form the Alcubierre bubble.

Thanks for watching, as usual. No idea what the next update will be, but I'm sure it'll be neat.

Today's mini-update: Eta Panorama Extravaganza

Kazinsal did a whole bunch of new starfields and by god the Eta system looks amazing. Click on the mini-panorama below to view the full-size version (warning: 3.8 MB PNG.)

That's a whole bunch of poorly-taken, otherwise-unaltered in-game screenshots of the irradiated pulsar-centric beauty that is Eta.

Today's Update: Billboards!

So Pieguy and the Captain have been working on a little somethin' somethin' to add to the world of BB and they've decided that now's a good time to let you lot have a look at them.

So, without any further ado: Billboards!

Click the images for a larger version.

There'll be plenty more adverts and signs in the mod itself, but these two should give you folks a good idea of how they'll look like.

We'll be back later with another update.

RE: Broken Bonds - Hone - 05-01-2014

So can you play it atm?

RE: Broken Bonds - Savas - 05-01-2014

Closed beta starts in September, if I am not Mistaken.

RE: Broken Bonds - Gaz83 - 05-01-2014

Looks great. Can't wait.

Today's update: Accretion

Cap's been working on a little something fancy for one of the Frontier systems: a black hole with accretion disk. It's still early in development, but we're fairly pleased with how it's turning out so far.
