I it just a scene, a 3D snapshot post-processed later with Blender's renderer.
I am now working on the in-space scene (Me, Canaan and D9 scene which happened yesterday in Delta).
Basically, this way you can rotate and render the scene (as well as manipulate objects in it) in any way you wish.
I actually have an idea of making .blend scenes with Blender gaming engine, that would allow one to walk interiors of the stations. Could be a simple simulation of a first person or so. Actually, Blender is capable of more complex stuff (see Blender games).
