That feel when people say Anti-Mage isn't a late carry. I cry everytime.
Well, he's a carry and he does pretty alright with six items. However, he's generally weaker than a lot of other carries in the lategame once those other carries have caught up on farm. Anti-Mage's purpose is to be ahead of the curve. If he's not, he's actually fairly weak. He's still got a nice skillset between blink and mana void though.
tl;dr people are mostly right when they say he's not as much of a lategame carry as other heroes.
Despite being somewhat of a natural counter to Medusa I'd argue a six-slotted Medusa (optionally with a Rapier) will crap on a six-slotted Anti-Mage in a 5v5 engagement (and there should only really be 5v5 engagements in the lategame, particularly with a Rapier Dusa on the field).

The problem is that most late carries have three specific category: Random-based, Static, and Transformation.
Random-based late carries are probably one of the strongest carries in the game, provided that they fall into the good graph of the distribution. Many of these heroes include: Faceless Void, Sniper, Juggernaut, Phantom Assassin, and Phantom Lancer. If they don't tend to get a lucky chance. They usually won't perform as well as other late carries. For these reasons, they are mostly classified as able to carry mid-game.
Static late carries are carries who will never have RNG-based or transformation abilities. Because they are static they will usually be predictable in terms of carry strength. Many of these heroes include: Anti-Mage, Naga Siren, Shadow Fiend, Luna, Ursa, Medusa, Morphling and Spectre. As these heroes will never change. They will mostly burn the same amount of mana, make the same amount of illusions, have the same amount of souls, same stacking fury swipe damages, etc. For this reason, most heroes in this category have a way of farming quickly and reaching ahead of the game provided that they have a good early game.
Then, you have transformation carries. The strongest if they have their transformation active, but mostly weaker than all late carries if their transformation ability is on cooldown. Many of these heroes include: Chaos Knight, Sven, Tiny, and Dragon Knight. Because of their transformation ability. This allows them to have a significant impact on the early game, mid game, and late game.

This two natural nemesis has been discussed and had been lobby-tested. Both equally farmed Anti-Mage and Medusa both depend on whoever gets the better initiation.
