Actually it depends which area you live in. Ontario/Quebec have high taxes but are great places to live.
Canada's a good place to live if you don't mind miserable weather. Unless you're in BC you're going to get 30C in the summer and -30C in the winter. And if you don't mind dealing with Canadians, all we do is complain about weather.
Housing can be high but employment is solid for trained immigrants. Just make sure your training and experience can be transferred, I knew a machinist from Croatia who worked the same miserable packing boxes job as me.until his credentials finally came over so he could do better.
Also, if you don't mind cold, you can go the extreme route and work in Northwest Territories or the Yukon. They pay better and the work is often seasonal so you don't have to live there all the time. Also, they have aurora borealis.
