it is what you supposed to see inside dense nebula, ingame nebulas gonna be much larger and this technique permits nebula to look like huge 3D cloud from distance instead of sprite like Freelancer has

Hm, but I`d still go after sprites as for low LOD, to keep up resources...
Also, while the cloud is looking fine - you might try to work with texture and colors as well, because you might occasionally make it even more awesome.

sprites cant give you 3d feel since they are 2d planes, my technique uses textured spheres with a bit of pixel shader magic to smooth corners + fade
as for colors and textures, well I just used some, but since nebula params will be defined inside .ini file, this is a question of fine tuning in future
also adding a bit shifted colors + different textures will make it more awesome but I've already spent whole day making this
