I was obsessed with Chernobyl for a while. I even planned on going there. There are tours that allow you to go all the way to Pripyat or Chernobyl site. They were like 1.000 USD or something, including the Geiger counter.
It is one of the worst accidents (it is not an accident but a stupidity actually) happened towards the mother nature. Humans, animals, plants... they are all FUBAR because of some idiot who tried to cool down a nuclear reactor with 3 turbines while the real number was 42 if I remember correctly.
IDIOTS.
And yes, you can see mutated animals there. And humans. There are still villages near Chernobyl area that are inhabited. There is a school of adaptation for children who are affected by extreme radiation. There was this photo-journal about it. You have to see it, I cried while looking at it, and believe me, I don't cry at all.

It's hauntingly beautiful, like all ruined and abandoned cities - but this one bears a special significance. Not just for the people of the Ukraine and Belarus, but for the world, I feel.
I'd like to visit it some day, and take some pictures of my own.
