Here in the Netherlands they tend to use roundabouts liberally to keep traffic flowing. They work well as long as everyone actually respects the rules that govern them (and basically yield to all traffic already on the roundabout). They also don't work if they are too damned small, or have a clear, hardened center (people end up just driving through the center then).

They are apparently thinking of installing a roundabout at the intersection near here when they finish building a new highway such that you would have two heavily traveled four lane highways intersect with a roundabout. Since that's something I know you folks on the east side of the pond (and down on the bottom of the planet:)) have more experience with, I'd like your input on how well they actually work, and if you think a conventional traffic signal would be better (or worse).
There are actually quite a few here in Indy. They just finished a double-roundabout on Keystone (Makes a figure eight). Where were they putting one in Lafayette, didn't hear about it..
