it's not that you want 1v1 ratio numbers in every fight but that you want 1v1 ratio numbers at any given moment (maybe with some deviation if you have large numbers of aces)
if i get ganked by 4 people at the same time it's not fun for anyone (esp the 4 because i'm just gonna start running and you're not gonna kill me because it's discovery freelancer and i have 80 nanobots)
if i get attacked by 4 people but each gives you a duel (keeping in mind that my nanobots are not gonna increase if you're not tragically bad at the game) then it's fine
ah yes the typical "line up and die for me please" attitude
duels are borderline torture for people who have to go against someone who knows his stuff
the problem arises when the 4 people not only decide to click on the 1 man at the same time but also act like they're going to die in real life if they lose 1 nanobot (the typical base/caphugging or running away), but if they just play the game and click back without fear then the game is fun for everyone involved
strong gamer pvpers are often treated like scum of the earth and thats bad but them going "haha just duel me one by one" is equally bad because its just asking the bads to throw themselves at you and die
finding a damn compromise isn't hard, if you have to gank most good pvpers won't mind as long as you treat them with respect
edit: tl;dr stop treating eachother like assbutt and the game will be good
Why don't we all just RP very chivalrous and honourable characters and fix this with a face. Then if you gank you're also bad at rp since you broke character
Now what do people think of "manual matchmaking"
E.g. You have newer guys and traders with you, you are all on snubs. And you see a few aces logged together.
It breaks immersion for the two people that do this sure, but you just PM the lead guy, and try to setup rough ratio of numbers that'd make it an even fight before you meet.
I know one of the aces here doesn't like it as he will try his best when someone oorp messages him(how sad is that when that's a bad thing :]) - but in my experience it did lead lead to spots where everyone left happy. Even when the weak pvpers lost, they still got a 4vs2 fight they willingly went into
