Actually you're wrong there. They're originally from Gallia and they were used to spy on and collect information on the Sirian Houses for the Crown.
Though a lot of people, including me, really hate Igisis's version of Junker lore.
I wouldn't mind a rewrite and retconn. No gypsies though.

I actually thought this quite nicely tied up the origins of the Junkers. I mean in Vanilla they were sort of an enigmatic faction which rose up without a solid history and no clear ethnicity associated with the sleeper ships. Also, I mean the base in Texas [b] Beaumont[b] a Gallic name. Maybe they were meant to be a remnant of the French who didn't get their own SS, but I like the way the lore spins them and their subsequent separation from the crown.
