Maybe most of these have been answered before, but I didn't exactly know what to write to get the correct results from a search.
I'll try to expand on this over time, so if you have a question to add, you're welcome to post here.
If anyone has some of the answers, I hope you'll enlighten me. Just a link or a search keyword would be appreciated.
Please tell me if some of the answers should be corrected.
Here goes:
1. Is there any major factions that don't require skype?
I know skype is important, but I don't really use it, that's why I indie so too much. A: Not really. Check before you begin writing your story to a certain faction, if you absolutely don't want to use skype.
2. Would it be silly to make a 'punching in/punching out' thread for when I 'go to work'?
I thought I'd might do this with one of my indie miners, so transporters, security and pirates know when there's activity. 2A: If you want friendly activity, yes. If you're want to be stealthy it's obviously not.
3. How would I go about donating to an official faction?
Since I'm using an official IFF/ID but I indie, I want to pay some dues to that faction. How would I go about that? Do an iRP contact? 3A: Are you sure you want to do that? Then post an iRP message.
4. Would it better to make a forum profile for each char I RP or does it increase workload on admins and servers?
I want to give my characters more depth and avoid an 'umbrella' name like this. 4A: If you have some characters you consider long-term RP projects, it can be a good idea.
Don't make one for each character you make or use the different profiles for power/metagaming.
5. Touchy subject, but how far do you go iRP before you report?
Is it better to write a lot of // messages ingame or just report and leave the work to the moderators. I don't like to report people, but I dont want to be some sort of in-game lawman either, that's why I ask. I'll say in advance, I've never reported anyone or threatened to do so, still learning myself. 5A: Uhm.. Ehrr. Try to handle it calmly on the spot, it's ok to use // to avoid any confusion. Be sure that you know the rules before you report and don't report out of anger alone.
Consider how harmful the violation is. Don't report minor or purely accidental violations.
If you decide to report, be sure to collect as much evidence as possible. Best evidence is video or pictures. Fraps or a 3rd party screencapture program is useful, as the standard Print Screen causes your game to lag. DSAce files can also be used, but are not as reliable since it can be manipulated more easily.
Allways remember to wait 10-15 minutes before reporting. The evidence you've collected will still be the same when you've thought it through.
6. Is there a way to moderate the threads you started yourself?
Say, if another user had a question in this thread, could I quote that, edit it into my original post and delete his post to clear up the thread myself? Or should I in that case ask a mod to clear it up or just leave it? 6A: No. If you want a clean thread, you can make a template and ask people nicely to use it.
7: I saw someone with LNF/KNF/RFP tag and Pirate/Freelancer/other ID, is that legal?
Is using a government Navy/Police IFF with non-matching ID against the server rules? And is it considered as falsification of documents iRP? A:
8: When my ID says I can attack to protect friendly, what does that exactly mean?
Is friendly only the top-rated faction in my reputation list? Or is it all factions that says friendly when I move my cursor over their name? A:
9: Can I just buy reputation with those I want and start shooting to protect all my new friends?
If I want to kill traders and steal their cargo, but do it as a freelancer to keep my back clear, can I just buy some reputation and a cloak, then wait wait for a trader to shoot at my NPC-friend and go 'engaging to protect friendly'? A:
I think that's all the important ones.
Bonus: I've noticed in the techchart that LWB has a VHF and a bomber.
I can't seem to find these on the Wiki. Do these exist or what shipline would a not-so-wealthy LWB indie fly? A: They do exist, but can be difficult to find info about. Both can be bought at Eindhoven Depot in Saar
1. Is there any major factions that don't require skype?
Major, no. I do know one minor trading faction that you can/might join without Skype.
2. Would it be silly to make a 'punching in/punching out' thread for when I 'go to work'?
Well, I doubt that people who want to either trade or mine in seclusion would post anything. I just want to see rarer IDs used to create more encounters.
3. How would I go about donating to an official faction?
Just contact them on Communication Channel and work it out.
4. Would it better to make a forum profile for each char I RP or does it increase workload on admins and servers?
Too much effort, unless you want to keep them seperate.
5. Touchy subject, but how far do you go iRP before you report?
You don't go inRP or ooRP about reporting players for breaking the rules. That itself is against the rules.
6. Is there a way to moderate the threads you started yourself?
No. You can report your thread to have it closed/moved etc, so that once moderator looks at it, he might do it.
BONUS: Wiki is outdated. Do not rely on it. Use FL Stat to find information on equipment, ships and cargo.
Quote:1. Is there any major factions that don't require skype?
Preferrably some non-corrupt factions. I know skype is important, but I don't really use it, that's why I indie so too much.
No
Quote:2. Would it be silly to make a 'punching in/punching out' thread for when I 'go to work'?
One man is not activity
Quote:3. How would I go about donating to an official faction?

Yep, you can contact official faction via comm. channel.
Quote:4. Would it better to make a forum profile for each char I RP or does it increase workload on admins and servers?
(I mean to give characters more depth and avoid an 'umbrella' name like this.)
Sometimes umbrella name shows that you're not biased/metagaming. But it's up to you.
Quote:5. Touchy subject, but how far do you go iRP before you report?
I think my question boils down to weather it's better to write a lot of // messages ingame or just report and leave the work to the moderators. I don't like to report people, but I dont want to be some sort of in-game lawman either, that's why I ask. I'll say in advance, I've never reported anyone or threatened to do so, still learning myself.
Depends on said players behaviour. Sometimes he can simply miss something.
Quote:6. Is there a way to moderate the threads you started yourself?
No
Quote:I've noticed in the techchart that LWB has a VHF and a bomber, but I can't seem to find them on the Wiki. Do these exist or what shipline would a not-so-wealthy LWB indie fly?
Shipline exists. Wiki is outdated. You can also try Red Hessian shipline, which's better, but I'm biased.
When looking at the tech chart, click the links in the top row to jump to the list of ship/weapon nicknames, then use a program like FLStat and check the "nickname" column to find more information.
The LWB "Sichel" VHF does have a wiki page (which may be outdated), but it's not listed in the Fighters page. The bomber is the "Sense". Both can be purchased at Eindhoven Depot in Saar.
Wauw. Thanks for the fast responses. Short and to the point Carrick, nice.
1. Thanks
2. S3: I only meant for myself, I don't mind company. Good or bad.
ZC: Better than nothing, no?
3. Thanks
4. S3: Effort for who, me or the staff? I don't mind the effort, if it's the preferred way to do it.
ZC: I see your point. I'll go with this for now.
5. S3: Ok, didn't know that. Only that threatening behavior is forbidden. I thought trying to deal with it in a calm iRP manner was generally encouraged.
ZC: And if he's just missed something, is it in your opinion allright to try to handle it iRP?
To be more specific. If I see a guy without an ID or a guy that attacks without proper introductions. Do I just report him instantly or try to see what's going on iRP first?
6. Thanks. Guess I can allways edit the original and just leave the others. My thought was a kind of FAQ for more obscure questions. May have others in the future.
Bonus. Thanks all
ZC: Should a LWB pilot do some RP before a RH vessel would be considered not-stolen?
Zed: Nice find. Spent some time looking for those. I tend to fly around in my Stargazer way to long, looking for ships in vain.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Snake's attempt was example of yes. But if you're going to make LWB char and post that you'll harras New Berlin system today, that will be example of no.
Quote:ZC: And if he's just missed something, is it in your opinion allright to try to handle it iRP?
Yep, if someone is going to attack you out of his zoi, you can say that he has no power in said system. Better prevent someone from breaking rules.
Quote: If I see a guy without an ID
I usually ignore such things. Same goes to zoner whales docking in house space and freelancer 5kers. They don't worth your time.
Quote:ZC: Should a LWB pilot do some RP before a RH vessel would be considered not-stolen?
No, LWB are Red Hessians most closest allies and they can use our tech more/less freely, especially indies. But you're always welcome to go and RP it.
There are a lot of things you can see everyday which you can report. But that is not usually a good way to go around here.
But, if the player insults, tries to do something that might affect you in one way or other, do reprt him, when you are really pissed off.
I saw a BWT supplying a base in my OC char and as soon as I cd'ed him he starts to spam the system chat with all kinds of // messages such as his Skype Id and that he will pay me later and that he has to study....all sorts of messages. Even after I warned him to stop that and pay a million. He was thinking that I am pirating for profit. So I blew him up after he started to fo around that he would pay me later and that I can speak to him on skype. After I blew him off, he said that he will report me in private. I could have easily reported him. But didnt.
On the other hand, I reported a guy that tried to blow me ip on my codes storage ship in conn even after I warned him. He blew up my client too. See the difference, though both are reportable incidents, I got pissed off Only at the second incident. Reporting, for me is another way of letting my frustration out. Also skype is best for communicating within faction members. It has its own importance.
Join a faction that suits your style and operates in your favourite part of space. Joining a faction comes down to your personal liking, but you still can contribute to any faction that might need some activity and help them.
These are a lot of adminny rule-related questions, but I'll try:
7. IFFs alone don't entitle someone to anything - it's the ID that matters. I think Freelancer IDs with a lawful military IFF are acceptable, but they're encouraged to keep the appropriate Freelancer IFF.
With the Pirate ID, no idea how they got a KDF/LN/RFP (shooting NPCs and never docking to reset it, maybe), but it's asking for a sanction. There are documented cases of sanctions for using unlawful IDs, but hiding under a Zoner IFF to deceive others.
If you've got a history of using a faction's IFF as a Freelancer/Pirate, but attacking that same faction and docking on their bases, be prepared to get your reputation forcefully adjusted and blocked from those bases through Faction Right 5.
8. A "friendly" is usually a player with the same faction ID as you (ex. LN and LN), or belonging to an allied faction (see your ID first for "may ally with..."). This is also the case with players grouped together protecting one another, such as a trader hiring and grouping up with a Freelancer escort or pirates getting a mercenary to help them.
Don't group with players using IDs that would be hostile to you in order to get an advantage (ex. LN and LR to fight Xenos) or someone will take a screenshot of the player list and you'll get sanctioned. You can begrudgingly agree that they need to get popped first, but visibly collaborating (even via PMs, which the admins can read) is a no-no. Looking at Rule 4 here, make sure everyone present is aware of what you're doing.
9. The whole "defending NPCs as a reason to engage" issue has been murky, though many unlawful and lawful IDs allow them to make demands or engage combat targets within their ZOI anyway. The cloaking scenario you mentioned sounds really iffy, especially if you engage instantly or silently. Again, the ID matters more than the IFF, so even if you have a similar IFF to the NPCs, you do not belong to their faction. You definitely can't pirate traders as a Freelancer, but you can assist a group of pirates.
The only cases where Han Freelancers shoot first is when pursuing bounties posted on the forums. (Check this section of the rules)

Rephacks (built-in, forced rep adjustments) are constantly being adjusted to reduce uncertainty and complaints, so some of what I've said may be out of date.
Be responsible about the flexibility offered by unaffiliated, non-faction IDs. It just takes a few high-profile abuses of the Freelancer, Pirate, and (previously) Miner ID for people to take up pitchforks and have them targeted for further restrictions. If it feels like you're breaking the rules, you probably are. If not, prepare to become the reason why we can't have nice things.

Encouraged by who? (whom?) The rules or government iRP. And is it something you report iRP to create some work for the police/BHG or is it not a crime iRP?
I must stress that this is not to get other people punished in any way, only to try and 'clean up' in the mistakes being made and/or create something do for lawfuls ingame.
Ok, So randomIFF/freelancerID is ok but not randomIFF/unlawfulD?
Or does it only apply to Zoner IFF/unlawfulID? And what about CorporateIFF/unlawfuID?
I'm really confused about this whole matching IFF/ID issue as you can tell.
Yes, I've read about the FR5 a couple of places.

Mulling on this. Still some confusion.
Generally don't group with anyone lower than neutral on your reputation-sheet, right?
But they don't have to have the same IFF to be my friends?
A more specific case: I have Freelancer IFF/ID, but have done some jobs for LPI Then is see a player pirate attack some LPI npcs. Can I then say: 'Hey, you shot my friends, now you must die.'? I mean, is it enough that LPI are 2nd on my rep-list, but not the IFF I'm flashing? Or does "Can attack any ship in self-defense or to protect an allied or neutral ship" only apply to player ship?
Edit: Terrible example. LN can of course attack pirates anywhere in their ZoI.

I surely have some trouble getting a comlete understanding of this, but..
Boom. If you're right about this, then my question is almost answered. (need to get this IFF/ID 100% straight)
Edit: I know IFF doesn't make you part of a faction, I mean if you're right in this context. (assisting neutral/friendly)
If it's allright with you, I might take the last one and put it into OP as a question of its own. (or the FAQ if it gets revived)
Can I pirate people when I am Freelancer? You definitely can't pirate traders as a Freelancer, but you can assist a group of pirates. (Link to rules here when i find the precise ones and get time to revise the whole deal.)

When I ask these question, I try to formulate them in a way which the answer will cover as many questions I have about the subject as possible.
I have no intention of sneaking around instagibbing people. (as funny as it'd might be.) Imho such things spread frustration and I generally don't roll like that in community-based games. The other guy behind the screen might get enraged, vent his anger on the people around him, with or without realising it and this leads to a world full of angry people.
