To be usable for basic working (opening documents etc.)
Free, or very cheap
User Friendly:
- Linux - Ubuntu / Mandriva / Fedora series
- Windows - despite the many defects is quite user friendly (XP, 7, 8)
Secure:
There is still many loopholes in security that allows
stealing your data no matter what system do you have.
Yet I would say Linux - since there is not much (if not none)
malware/viruses for that operating system.
To be usable for basic working:
To be frank, it could be ANY working system
Mac OSX, X desktop Linux , Windows...
Free, or very cheap:
- Linux (usually for free)
- Windows (I guess that XP/7 could be quite cheap to obtain)

I don't think non-mainstream distros should be recommended to people that never had prior experience with linux. They should go with Mint or Ubuntu first before moving on to something more adapted to their use.
This distro looks nice though, strange I never heard of this till now.
I agree, I actually have a bootable version on a USB drive on my key ring
The layout of Crunchbang is pretty straight forward, just as approachable as Ubuntu or Mint.
Linux Mint Xfce is great, I prefer Windows 7. It does the job without problems. Do NOT ever, get Windows 8 or 8.1. Terrible, terrible programs. They somehow managed to get the new version (8.1) to be worse than the older version. It's like Vista 2.0.
EDIT: We attempted to uninstall Windows 8.1 from a laptop. The OS had created partitions on the HDD, made them invisible and restricted access to save it's self. It avoided a formatting attempt and clung to life through several attempts.
