Well, when I first got into airsoft I searched for kit that was durable (imo, the most important considering how much you end up beating the damn thing), well-made, powerful to a degree (anything over 300 fps really), and cheap. I got that gun I linked before after a few years of play when I knew I wanted to play the game for a long time.
There're quite a few of these at places like Evike and AirsoftGI, I can take a look at some later after I'm done with work.
I have a bunch of cheap airsoft guns that I never properly used.
Have 2 battery powered things that are probably considered toys:
A $25 16 round semi/automatic plastic handgun with decent accuracy.
A $20 "cute version" smg that has a rate of fire of around 180/min but hold only approx 150 rounds and is crazy inaccurate
I mean, they're toys but getting hit still stings like hell.

Hurts less, and what not.
The closest I've seen a paintball gun come to realism was a M4... which still had a ugly reservoir for the paintballs on top of it, which ruined the experience for me. Some airsoft replica's pretty much work like a real steel version, look like one, just as heavy and and can still sting you up. There's also 8mm versions of airsoft and when a sniper with +600 FPS hits you with it your day ain't all that sissy'd up. What you've heard is probably said by paintball fanboys unable to keep an open mind about something new they don't understand or have even tried it at all.

Though, a paintball field opened near my place a few months ago. It's fun. Can't deny human likings. It's quite new that Germany became more tolerant in terms of airsoft guns and paintball. And I'm glad about it. A few years ago, people would have called anyone being a tiny bit into "playing with guns" ... a potential amok runner.
Yet, I agree that it's stupid to use replicas of real weapons, playing war as authentically as possible. I wouldn't want to know what war is like. Why play it?
I'd rather throw softballs at each other instead of firing 200 m/s fast plastic bullets with a real-looking M4A1 at my friends. To me, that's no kind of sport anymore. Maybe, if I grew up as American, I'd say other.
I'm Dutch Narcotic. We have laws here too. Especially since airsoft only got legal (and only when acquired the appropriate license and whatnot) in February 2013.
Luckily, most don't necessarily play it to "experience" war. That'd be stupid considering it ain't real, doesn't even cut close to real. Some people pay thousands of dollars to fix up their cars, spoilers, wheelcaps, lights, you name it. Some enjoy buying/fixing computers. And some enjoy grouping up with friends, crawl through a forest or walk in a deserted factory and play a game with "toy" guns, which is exactly what they are.

EDIT: Actually a 250ish dollar price range is not bad. Just I'm skeptical on the quality if its plastic.
I personally use a Classic Army KC-89. When it comes to airsoft replica's, I'd say, quality over quantity. Rather pay a little bit more for a full steel, more durable replica's than a piece of plastic. Consider the high-end versions of Classic Army, Tokyo Marui and VFC as quality. Jing Gong, Boyi and such are the quantity goods. They work too. But it's a matter of choice. You want official markings on the replica? Etc.
I'd love to get into airsoft, but unfortunately it is currently illegal in Australia (due to a mass shooting in the mid-90's, which led to some of the strictest gun laws in the world).
Hopefully, in a few years, the government might lighten up a bit and make it legal (with appropriate regulations etc).
until then, we down under folk can only look longingly and be jealous.

Well Im not that worried about the official markings on it, but more of how well it performs. But I do agree. If I'm going to get one of these things, there is no way I'm going to get a cheap one over a full metal one. Just need to do some more digging around.
Oh boy. I came a little earlier on. Picked up the spray-cans I had laying around for a few months now for the first time and decided to give my love a paint-job. She's lovely. I want to renew our vows. She's called '*snip*' by the way, NOT under-aged (even though will some say otherwise, because = jealousy) and doesn't kick like a mule but still gets those unlucky to cross her path shout out "OUCH" and "HIT" in rapid succession with ease.
Applied first a few coats of OD, a few mud browns and after the marsh grass applying with a sniper scarf, generating that snakeskin look. Another few browns and greens on top and I was done. Of course finished it off with a few coats of clear, non-shining coating for durability and making the colours "blend" together.
Also Tyler, you lucky bastard. Looks damn good for just some spray cans you had lying around. I'm still checking out Airsoft guns. Been watching a lot of reviews on certain types and makes. I'm defintely going to get something from G&G since they have a lot of positive reviews on their stuff. Well at least from what I have seen.
