I've played a bit of gmod RP but it tends to be either crazy 10 year olds, or super cliquey early 20 somethings with a hard on for hate.
I've heard some pretty cool stories from table top style RP forums, but I feel like they'd be kinda hard to get into, as you can't judge the community without spending a fair amount of time there.

Heh, I used to play GTA IV RP, that's how I met Junkertown and eventually moved on to Disco.
Can't say that I really play (nor have I found) any good multiplayer RP games except for Disco. I do quite a bit of SP RP in Skyrim and Morrowind, but that's not really the same as Discovery's RP nor as fun. I'd bet that there are some alright RP communities/forums out there based around the TES series (and other RP-friendly games) to make them, uh, multisingleplayer for lack of a better word, but I haven't really been looking all that much for them; Disco already fills that niche rather well for me.
Samp RP.ru (GTA SA) has great RP world. You can do there EVERYTHING. Policeman, gankster, Millitary, Mafia, Doctor, Policitian. Every new char is a Homo
They have 14 servers and three of them are always full (3000 online) about 12 000 at all
I can't say if it falls under roleplay, but I've used to create a rather large universe for our writings with my friend (I believe it falls under roleplaying). As for me and GF, we are creating yet another universe being inspired after Hundred Years War and GOT.
As for games... That's tricky one. In SP, I tend to explore Skyrim for sake of exploration and encounters, reading all the books around.
Has anyone ever played Everyone is John? It's a table top style RPG that you can play over skype.
Each person plays a personality of John (he's a schizophrenic) and must work towards their chosen obsessions while they are in control of John.
In one playthrough I became the Roach Lord, bringing the city to its knees through careful application of roaches.
