So warning shots, from the name you can exactly figure out what it means.
"To warn someone from potential danger by doing minor damage to the target, if one does not comply to a demand/request" this is the correct definition for Video Games, since the definition in real life does not harm the target but rather tries to intimidate him that danger will come if he does not comply.
So today I had this encounter with a group I shall not name, where for RP reasons I have left the cockpit of my ship
Shorty after a fighter of the same group comes and shoots me, he downs my shields, pauses and then downs my hull to FORTY PERCENT(%)
After that I freaked out, engaged free fly mode and ran away, asking "Why did you shoot me?"
He responded with "Just a warning shot"
Just a warning shot? you almost bloody killed blew my vessel, I do not see how this is minor at all.
And the guy didn't RP beforehand, and there was no provocation or hostility in the situation.
Because of that warning shot the guy gave me, I lost some regens that very much affected the duel that happened right after the situation.
Which also gave the guy a PvP advantage, since I didn't have full nanos and bots, leading to me losing the duel.
So I ask of the admins, how much damage should you inflict, if you are "Warning shooting" someone.
Warning shots are possible, but not in the situation you have described. With no RP beforehand and beyond 50% shields, it's a rule violation.
Quote:3.1 An attack is any hostile action that drains shields to less than 50%. Saying "Engaging" is not sufficient and aggressors are not allowed to destroy a ship before allowing sufficient time to respond. If a player is attacked he has the right to defend himself regardless of who is attacking. Trading nanobots, shieldbatteries or other ammo and equipment during a fight is also considered taking an active role in the engagement.
Personally, a real 'warning shot' is just firing your guns/turrets across their bow, or in their general direction. In my experience, even a small blast into another players shields can make them mistake it for an all out attack, and run, or begin firing back etc, when it may not have been necessary. In your case, I think they pushed it a little too far and certainly violated the rules.
If the sheild is down to 50% then that is an engagement there. Anything above that can be a warning but I suggest just shooting in a random direction would work too to show off your guns.
I personally don't use warningshots as a Pirate anymore
I did that, but when i did my targets ran or tried to engage me as they didn't understood that - so it pretty much depends on the target you encounter
you could ram him instead works great on train alike
i got another thing... IF there is enough RP and a Pirate drains your shield 70% as you didn't pay fast enough it's not even a RuleViolation i guess, right?

I think rules are quite dull regarding the shield (in some cases). From my point of view, disabling the shield (without the further actions) could be valiable last warning shot. Writing down some lines thereafter is enough time to make these shields recharge.

i agree because how can you tell if you drained it 50% or 75% depends on the shields and so on...
id prefer the kill-shield-warningshot-rule *grins*

However, that could be abused in some cases. If one would be forced to use bats as the other side would begin engagement without the other's shield recharged, it already places her or him in a worse situation in the possible combat.
