Two men stood behind a thick plane of glass from an observation booth that looked into one of the operating rooms in the Royal Bretonian Hospital on New London.
One of the men, bald, wearing a polo shirt and a pair of chinos picked up a newspaper. He grunted disdainfully, noting the date and time on the top corner of the page.
"They had the article out before they even started surgery."
Bretonian Commissioner Wounded in the Line of Duty
The other murmured something under his breath. Both stared down at the man on the operating table, hearing the faint, far-off beep of machinery in the room.

Physicians of New London Imperial Hospital have released information regarding the current status of the hospitalized BPA Commissioner Sir Alan Lauderdale. At 4:55PM tonight, Sir Alan succumbed to shock as a result of his injuries sustained nearly a week ago why engaging in combat with a known Corsair pirate. He was 57 years old.
Following ejection, Sir Alan's escape pod received a massive shockwave from the detonation of a nuclear mine nearby. Although the radiation did not cause life threatening problems, it did delay treatment for Sir Alan's wounds, as he needed to go through detoxification before doctors could operate on him without being exposed themselves.
The detoxification process only took fifty-three minutes, a record time, said Dr. Gordon Saint-John, New London Imperial's Director of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Saint-John remarked, however, that it was because of the detoxification that was needed that may have resulted in Sir Alan's passing.
"In trauma-related injuries, the hour between the time of the injury and the time of treatment is absolutely crucial. Unfortunately for Sir Alan, due to the radiation, we could not begin treatment until after nearly two hours had passed," said Dr. Saint-John.
Dr. Anna Graham, Sir Alan's surgeon, added, "90% of the injuries that we handle here at New London Imperial are trauma-related. Less than 1% of the injuries we handle involve both significant radiation poisoning and trauma."
Sir Alan was kept in stasis by the hospital until it was clear that he would not be improving.
The BPA has not released a press statement at the moment, though many officers expressed their condolences. Sir Alan did not have living family members, except for distant cousins on Planet Denver in Liberty.
The Home Secretary has yet to make a statement regarding Sir Alan's replacement.
