Introduction:
Bacterial life-form, unique to Edge Nebula where it is extracted by various factions for commercial use in the Colonies for centuries. This species is able to survive in vacuum of space and form colonies on drifting asteroids rapidly metabolizing various chemical compounds in the crust. The results are vast unending alien landscapes of green asteroid belts. There is only one planet in Sirius where AO’s inhabit natively: Kurile. It is an oddity as far human habitable worlds: it possesses breathable atmosphere but its surface - completely covered in ocean - is toxic to any lifeform that isn’t AO bacterias. Two conflicting theories exist:
More commonly accepted by Sirius scientific commodity, that Kurile bathed in bacteria rich Kunashir cloud was terraformed into its current state and otherwise would have remained a sterile planet.
The competing position argues that AO had infected the world and over millions of years thwarted any native simple life forms and over time became the only life capable of surviving in poisonous ocean.
Application:
Main producers/exporters are Zoners, Cryer and GMG (as result of hostile takeover of Samura’s facilities on Kurile) mainly for use of House of Bretonia and Kusari. Within Kusari, Samura Corporation deploys bacteria to enrich Junyo’s oceans to increase yields of company’s fisheries. Introduction of an ample supply of AO’s incentivized growth of critical species within the food chain of the colony.
Within Bretonia, found through unfortunate accident involving civilian transport lost with all hands crashing into Planet Harris with cargo hold full of alien organisms. Post facto inquiries found out that bacteria not only has survived in the harsh environment of the desert world of Harris but also had positive coefficient to local terraforming efforts by converting more abundant elements into oxygen and other gases necessary for human breathable atmosphere into.
It is understood that Maltese rogue state had also taken the opportunity to use nearby resources of Edge Nebula for their own end. While little data exists, intelligence suggests that introduction of AO’s increases yield of cardamine grasses and other crops adapted to caustic biosphere of Malta. Due to the hostility of its state towards The Order, no further study can be undertaken.
Effects and health risk
Sirius-wide spread of commercial applications for alien organisms should allow for unrestricted study concerning AO’s effect on human health. However Samura and Kusari government discourages and censors any practice that could be perceived as criticizing use of vital resources to maintain competitiveness of Kusari food production against Synth Foods. Cryer mysteriously redirected its efforts to focus instead entirely on new drug studies, among other products: stabiline. With GMG’s hostile take over of Kurile, the Keiretsu is unable to control who has access to largely isolated cadre of laborers allowing The Order to launch an independent inquiry. Following will be attached testimony of ex-Samura employees displaced by conflict.
"The workers at this base want to be here. It is isolated, so we are left to our very simple way of life without much interruption. There is much peace in a simple life -- a peace that I could not find in New Tokyo or anywhere else. The average lifespan of the fish workers here in Kurile is higher than anywhere else in all of house space, perhaps even Sirius. The only other place that has an average lifespan this long is Junyo, although I've heard that Outcasts are known for their longevity. Interesting..."
Yoriie Yamada
Ex-Samura, barkeeper
"Samura has sent scientists to this base to study our Alien Organisms more closely. Concern has been raised about the fact that we are indirectly eating them, because the fish absorb some of the more unusual alien compounds into their flesh."
Dr. Emon Ibuka
Ex-Samura, xenobiologist
Cryer officials could not be reached at that time, however one peculiar CNS report indicate that not every incident can be covered up even with best lobbying and public relations. In the year 799 mass outbreak gained sufficient media attention that it could have not been ignored. What follows is statement of concerned citizen of Kusari.
JUNYO WORKERS FALL ILL: SHIKOKU
Many of the employees working the fish farms of Junyo have been complaining of fatigue caused by an unidentified ailment. Samura doctors and scientists have been dispatched to investigate the strange illnesses that resulted in a record number of sick days in recent months. Those employees working in the Alien Organism processing decks have displayed the most serious symptoms. Officials at Samura's Shinjuku headquarters were unavailable for comment.
"My son has been eating the fish raised in Junyo all his life. We get excellent prices since we provide them with their Alien Organisms. When he went to New Tokyo he became very ill, but once he returned, he recovered very quickly."
Rikyu Koyama
Clear evidence portrays that consuming food products over an extended period of time that had considerable contact with alien organisms leads to symptoms similar to that of cardamine withdrawal syndrome. While no fatalities had been recorded, neither Samura or Cryer had attempted to study genome of affected individuals for any potential mutations. It is hereby advisory that no Order operative may be supplied with any edibles other than organic Kyushu products, Synth Paste or Cambridge sourced rations. A major outbreak would jeopardize morale and combat efficiency, still unknown long term effects notwithstanding.
