Today, while supervising operations on the flight line, sensor contacts reported 2 transports outside Ouray attacking Starflier patrols and capturing the pilots. When the order came to scramble, I decided that my best place was in the cockpit of my Bomber. I couldn't very well let our boys fight to protect Ouray while standing on the flight line coordinating cargo and equipment transfers. Good thing I wore my flight suit today.
After undocking from Ouray, I immediately saw the two transports hanging less than a klick outside the base. I first targeted the larger of the two, a standard Libertonian Transport. After a few passes with my Supernova, I managed to catch one on his hull before his shields came back up. Fortunately, our comrades' escape pods survived the blast, and I was able to bring them aboard. I immediately turned my attention to the second transport, this one a Rheinland built Behemoth. God, those things are ugly. Then again, so are most Kraut ships. After seeing what happened to his partner, the Behemoth tried to engage it's cruise engines, but I managed to stop it with a Train CD. After getting a few solid hits on him, he managed finally get into cruise, despite my firing quite a few CD's.
After that fight, I remained on station in case anyone else decided to try our defenses. I was not disappointed. A Junker ship came on my scope almost immediately, but he remained out of range. With one of them there, I was not about to dock. At the same time, I had no intentions of leaving Ouray defenseless.
Again, my instincts were right on target. The Junker must have been acting as a diversion for the Bounty Hunter's Guild, as four Bounty Hunters appeared on my scope shortly afterwards, and the Junker backed away. After a bit of back and forth with them, during which time I was really hoping for some reinforcements, they finally worked up the courage to come over and attack me.
A furious battle ensued, in which I was assaulted by 3 fighters and a bomber. I focused my attentions on the Bomber, since it was the most dangerous to the base, and the easiest target for me to hit. After he led me on a bit of a chase, I noticed my Junker friend come back into range and join the battle. I couldn't resist the chance to kill him, so I started focusing my fire on him. After a couple passes, I dropped his shields and started cutting into his hull. At this point, he decided that running would be a good plan. Since that took him out of the fight, and I had 4 other potentially dangerous problems around, I didn't try to stop him or chase him. I returned my focus to the bomber, but was unable to do any real serious damage before being forced to withdraw. I managed to get back into Ouray barely a scratch on my hull. Fortunately, they followed me right into Ouray's defense grid and were subsequently forced to withdraw from battle.
