Factions are important and bring out a lot of fun. Without them, there would be a huge lack of organized roleplay. Even if you don't like to roleplay, a roleplay environment is still good for making sure the factions play properly. Kind of like a red team and a blue team, except with a hell of a lot more teams. Nobody likes a teamkiller.
However, they also cause a lot of problems. Most officials think themselves better than any indies. As soon as an unofficial faction sprouts up, no matter how good the idea is, most of the time it will start getting mashed by every official faction there is. I've helped a lot of different small factions and tried to help them pull through, but official factions that aren't even enemies with their NPC faction even went completely out of their zone of influence to blow up their base and kill them on sight.
It's funny, they say all indies are lolwuts as their excuse, but officials are often the lolwuts...

Some factions don't need to move things forward - staying consistent and true to their own role is enough in most cases. Take factions like the IMG, Liberty Rogues, Planetform... They're good where they are at, doing what they do, and don't need much change. Factions that stagnate require a change of plan. Factions that are successful... why fix what ain't broken?

I am amazed at how fast this thread got derailed.....
So much for the 'go forth and have fun' attitude. All this negativity. Why not start another thread to vent your opinions on factions?
The OP asks 'any times of joy?' and we get elitism and a lack of drive.
It's a shame really when someone tries to talk about fond memories of Disco and people do their best to put them down.
Heres an idea, why not answer the OP or stay out of the thread?
I was a Junker a long time ago. Good people, good laughs and the opportunity to get pirated almost everywhere in Sirius. Then Kusari became completely hostile so I never went there. Deprived a lot of people my good coin that did and boy did they used to hit me hard.
Ho hum.
