if you want the mod to stop dying you should do this.

inb4 "waaahh but muh muh muh faction's special plaything in system x!" shut up no one cares about your faction this is about saving the mod

It's much much more complicated than that though.

Do you realize the amount of work it would take to rebalance all of the trading routes and mining fields? Could it be done? Absolutely, but it is a huge undertaking after all.

Also I don't really have the feeling that this would save the mod, what the mod needs isn't a smaller universe but simply more players and that's what we should discuss, how to get new players. This is a mod, not a triple A title so it's not like we can advertise and get people flocking to the server. The game is aging unfortunately and it will die eventually.

Bigger or smaller universe, what does it change to potential new players? How does it make the game more attractive to new players and most of all, how does it advertise the server to new players?

Sure, the game might feel a bit more active which could help the experience of new players but at the same time, a lot of people like to explore and the more the better. I personally enjoy exploring just for fun, some systems feels really nicely designed to me, I especially like the Sigmas and the Tau.
