404 error when launching launcher first time - Serpentis - 12-31-2025

Hey, I am getting this error when trying to launch the launcher.

I was going to play eventually anyway on my new PC, so, having a potential error with even getting the game to work, that is ashame.

Thank you

I have the same issue, did you get a reply?

Nope, nothing

Apparently the launcher is trying to fetch patches from patch.discoverygc.net, this domain currently has nothing running and I can't recall DiscoveryGC ever used dot net as domain, it should be trying to fetch from https://patch.discoverygc.com which does have a patch history. If you can't get Laz or someone else to check it you could try to redirect this empty domain to the right IP using something like the hosts file/variable.

Yes it should, but it doesn't. The launcher config XML is even pointing to the patch.discoverygc.com location, but the program is not picking it up. I also checked the registry and there's no entry for it either, which means it must be hard coded or it has to do with the script error, which keeps appearing.

Btw: Redirect via hosts file only works if you have an IP address for the patch.discoverygc.net - and its unknown so no IP address - so no redirect. So we're stuck, can't play at all.

You can point it to the the patch.discoverygc.com IPs (188.114.97.12 and 188.114.96.12)

Got this solution:

frank.exchange.of.views Wrote:

I had the same issue while installing discovery for the first time recently (surprised I haven't been able to find more info on the bug anywhere since this is probably happening to all new players starting from scratch and anyone installing discovery on a new machine (starting from discovery v5.0.8 w/ old launcher app)

Editing the launcherconfig xml file in the install directory didn't help since it already points to patch.discoverygc.com so the .net link must be hardcoded or stored in a different config file I was unable to find

I was able to get it working using a workaround by editing the windows hosts file to point the patch.discoverygc.net to the patch.discovergc.com IP address like so:

Open notepad with admin privileges (right click > run as admin)

From notepad, open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Append line
Code:
188.114.96.12 patch.discoverygc.net
(in case you are reading this in the far future the IP may have changed so double-check the server IP by running nslookup patch.discoverygc.com from CMD and use one of those IPs if needed)

You will likely get several false positives from your antivirus during patch update so disable your antivirus before running the launcher and initiating patch update

(optional) You can safely remove the redirect line from the hosts file after running the patch update as the launcher correctly points to patch.discoverygc.com now

This is an issue all new players and anyone installing the game on a new machine will probably encounter so the dev team should probably look into using a later discovery version as the starting point (I think the first or second hotfix after 5.0.8 fixes the issue already)

There must have been an active .net domain at some point or else no one starting from discovery v5 would be able to install patches or play the game at all (without the hosts file hack or manually replacing the launcher app with 2.2+)

You got it backwards, you want to redirect discoverygc.net to discoverygc.com, and patch.discoverygc.com does have an IP, which is 188.114.96.0.

I just tested it myself right now with my own hosts file and it redirects patch.discoverygc.net to patch.discoverygc.com just fine.
