Shadows of JiangXi - Vince Piccio - 01-07-2011

At first they were surprised, but still confident as they had been hunting whatever prey they had before. Then they were scared, as tachyon bolts started frying them and their bullets did nothing. Terror replaced fear, and they tried to run but those that turned tail were cut down. More came from deeper in the hospital only to meet the same fate.

The Coalition soldier was nowhere to be seen, and Iscariot stepped outside to see two more soldiers behind an ATV...

Chun made his way outside Checkpoint Alpha. He had spent a day being poked, prodded and having all sorts of medication and tubes stuck in his body. At one point, he was nearly dead. Today, he was sitting on the grass having a cigarette.

"Why didn't I take this up sooner... Ahhh..."

He was relaxed and calm. He shouldn't be, he wasn't technically meant to be outside. Hell, he wasn't technically meant to be alive. Life was full of complications. Little Ling being alive seemed to be one of them.

"Better move before the doc's realise I'm gone."

Ling headed to the equipment tent. He was going to arm himself properly this time. He loaded two pistols onto his belt. He then threw two machine guns into his backpack with his Jian and fastened a shotgun onto the back of it. He saw his assault rifle and grabbed as much ammo for that as he could. He looked down at his right arm. It was healed, sort of. Instead of skin, he had some sort of plate surrounding his arm. His ankle bore quite a big scar. He'd been in the wars, and it was no-where near over yet.

Chun got out of the tent, seeing two men in white coats going crazy at a guard - He reckoned this was his time to get away. He ran along to one of the quad bikes stationed near the back entrance. Checking no-one was nearby, he checked it's fuel and that it had a terrain map on it.

"Perfect. Now, bye bye crazy doctors."

He started the quad up and revved the engine.

"So long!"

The doctors saw him and immediately started running and shouting. The guard they were in angry discussion with laughed and opened the rear door. Not that it would have stopped Ling anyway, he was getting out of here.

Charging out down the road, he knew if he could reach the shoreline - He'd be safe. Well - nearly, there was the small matter of getting to the islands.

There was a ripple in the air, a crackling vortex of light as the Commissar was engulfed, literally torn out of Elias' hands, and was gone.

Uttering a curse, Elias stepped away from the anomaly that had swept the Commissar away. A localized temporal echo... like the gravity traps and the psionic erasers... all part of the devastation of JiangXi... There were things far worse than radiation poisoning to contend with.

Miller was allright, either swept into the future by a few minutes... or hours... or time had reversed... in which case he'd never been grabbed, and would have no idea that Elias had tried to save him.

Typical for JiangXi...

Elias didn't have time for it, he melted into the shadows, heading for outside, where he caught sight of two figures crouched by an ATV...

The jeep barrelled down the slope towards the river gorge past New Hangzhou. "Do you really need to go this fast?" 'Mikey' demanded.

"Where's the fun in going slow?" Vicenta said.

"Not getting killed!"

"Must you go on about that?"

"I'd say it's relevant, yes!"

"Fine, you sissy, I'll slow down!" She pushed the brake.

Nothing happened.

She slammed it down.

Nothing.

A long string of inventive curses in Spanish, Russian and Chinese. "The brakes are out!"

"What?!"

"We're gonna have to bail out of the jeep!"

"Are you crazy?!"

"It's that or go into the gorge!" She unbuckled her belt.

"Look, I'm not -"

"GO!"

***

The jeep plunged off the cliff and was smashed to pieces on the jagged rocks below.

Miller felt as if a blanket had been wrapped around him, squeezing and flexing until it perfectly matched his shape. And then the blanket was removed, and he was standing in the same room he'd been in before. Except this time, distinct bootprints were visible on the floor and the unknown man was gone.

He ducked down behind a cabinet, unsure as to what had just happened. But there was no time to deliberate on what had happened to him. He needed to escape the hospital without being noticed.

His wrist computer began to beep. One of the tracking devices entering the range. He checked it, and saw the dot was only two hundred metres away from him. How had it reached such a close distance before his wrist device had alerted him?

A bandit bursting in broke his train of thought. He held a spiked two-handed hammer, ready to swing down and pummel Miller to death. He reached for his pistol, unlatched it from its holster and began to pull it out when a sharp stabbing returned to his hand. He instinctively clasped his hand, and forced himself to initiate a forward roll to avoid the slamming hammer. He tried moving his pistol to the firing position again, and ignoring the pain he pointed it at the bandit and shot him in the face.

Run, were the only words that came to mind now. No poems, no songs, just run. And he did run, back the way he had come, toward the door. He'd have to break through any opposition still remaining at the door now, but he knew he couldn't wait any longer. He'd have to reach the other dot and try to rally its support to help fight off the bandits.

The heavy doors, much to Miller's relief, were unguarded. He pushed open the heavy hospital doors, throwing a grenade behind him as he desperately sought cover. The bandits were en masse now, he knew they couldn't be far behind.

The doors shut, and were then pushed open again by the powerful shockwave created by the grenade in the small reception area. Some screams could be heard, meaning the grenade had killed a few of his pursuers, but that provided little comfort for him. There were five more replacing every one he killed.

He ducked behind an ATV - the same one from just over an hour ago - and aimed down the sights of his AK-74. His trigger finger would be an insufferable pain, but he'd just have to deal with it. If he wanted to survive, he'd have to deal with it.

The door burst open. Men began pouring out. They were gunned down, but not by Miller. He didn't care, just so long as whatever was shooting at them wouldn't start shooting at him.

Bandits poured out of the hospital like water finding a leak in a jug. Bullets continued flying, and Miller risked a glance behind him.

He gasped, surprised. The recruit moved forward, to crouch next to Miller behind the ATV. He could smell something on the new arrival's breath. Was that... vodka? He didn't have time to ask, because an unexpected surprise burst out of the hospital, crushing the bandits as if they were tiny insects. Some sort of power armour shielded the occupant from any damage the bandits could dish out.

Miller didn't want to take any chances with it. For all he knew it could come after him next. He climbed onto one of the bandit's ATVs and pressed the ignition button. The engine roared.

'Come on!' He shouted to the other man. The man climbed on behind him without complaint, it taking extra effort as he struggled for balance and control of his limbs. Miller sped away as soon as the man was on the vehicle, leaving behind the bandits as they were slaughtered by the mysterious figure.

The man, clinging to Miller as he began speeding through the streets, vomited over the side. 'The river,' he said once he'd cleared his mouth, 'we should go to the river.' Miller was about to inquire as to the reason, but then the man spoke again. 'Alexander Vorobiev, you can call me sascha, I believe we've met...'

'The voice is familar, yes, I believe we have met before. And shouldn't we move to Check Point Alpha?' In all honesty, Miller wanted to seek medical attention for his wound. He doubted he'd be able to travel much further without proper medical care. He told Vorobiev about his wound.

'Would you like some vodka? It'll make the wound hurt less.' Miller took a swig from the vodka bottle.

Against Miller's best judgement, he had driven them through New HangZhou and they had reached the river. A light drizzle had begun to pick up now, and the river water looked like a mountain range as water droplets impacted its surface, creating depressions and elevated zones.

They drove without saying a word to each other. What was there to be said? They each had much on their minds, knowing they were bypassing Check Point Alpha. Would the Coalition even know if they were still alive?

'Thank you,' Miller said eventually, after twenty minutes of silence since reaching the river. 'For showing up, whether you intended to find me or not. It helped, a lot. So thank you comrade.'

Vorobiev was silent. They continued their trek across the thin clear zone between the river and the dense forest. River to the left of them, forest to the right of them, cannon ahead of them. Why did that poem keep coming to mind?

'Commissar-Captain, look!' He could sense the joy laced in the other man's voice. Miller directed his gaze to where Vorobiev was pointing, his hand materialising to Miller's left.

Floating on the river, armed with a mounted cannon and painted a green and black combination, was a modern armoured boat. Perfect for their needs.

More were arriving at Check Point Alpha... but apparently one of the recruits had decided to skip doctors advice that he withdraw, and carry on to Beta. Not that Alvarez couldn't appreciate it, give up now and you weren't a man... give up or be sent home and your career in the fighter corps was as good as finished.

"Captain..." Vance nudged him, handing him the binoculars. "Check out on the river... Colonel Gonzales' boat..."

Alvarez frowned, turning the binoculars to site in on the speed launch, rushing up the river at full tilt.

The only problem was, it wasn't the Colonel at the helm.

"Aww hell..." Alvarez intoned, shaking his head. "They went and nicked her boat... now she's gonna be mad..."

He shook his head at Commissar Miller and Vorobiev, who were expertly navigating the small, agile boat up the canal, and heading towards the coast. It would take them about half the time of the others to reach there, and it gave them a significant head start...

"Vicenta's going to eat them alive..." Alvarez said, tossing Vance the binoculars and sliding down and into the Social Credit, he grabbed his gunbelt, two .45 service pistols and a brace of grenades. He walked along the length of the gunboat, patting one of the BJ2 assault jeeps, climbing up and in as he started the engine.

He rolled the sleeves up on his gray commando sweater and loosened his shirt collar, gunning the accelerator, as he shot the agile jeep out of the back of the gunboat, spinning the wheel, he set off towards where the flashing indicator on the GPS told him Colonel Gonzales was supposed to be.

***BEACON ALPHA-NINER DETECTED***
***AUTOLOADING ENABLED***

***DROP POD LOADED***

Slamming out of the launch bay of the CPW-Karl Marx, high above JiangXi, a heavy assault drop pod streaked away from the battleship, deploying thrusters as it pinwheeled down through the atmosphere, ejecting its heat shields as it approached 30000 feet, parachutes blowing free, to allow the heavy platform to gently drift down, with almost pin point accuracy towards the drop zone.

As soon as it touched the ground, the protective bubble of the drop pod split and folded down, greeting Colonel Gonzales with a new toy.

"My boat!" Vicenta angrily hurled a rock into the water. "Somebody stole my goddamn boat! Ooooh, when I get my hands on those nuggets!"

"Colonel, how are you going to chase them without a vehicle?"

It was at this moment that the drop pod parked itself neatly beside the two of them and split open.

Vicenta appraised the contents. "Dibs," she announced, climbing up into the cockpit.

"Colonel, it's a one seater!" the gunner called as she fired the mech up. "How will I get back?"

"Try the jeep." And with a burst from the jump jets, she was gone.

Petko was walking down a small road near the main road. He was tired and beat up by the Bandit in their fight. Petko was with no energy. Scene he got here he hasn't sleep for one single minute. He managed to get out of the city and he was walking out from the city. He was still stealty and had his Sholder Cannon to protect him but with no Snipper rifle Dimitrov morale was low. He had a File in his back that he was supposed to give to High command.
He continued to walk near the road bu keeping a low profile. He told to himself.

" I have to pull together if I am gonna stay alive."

He took a bad hit the bandit didn't give easy he was like a crippled man. but still 34% combat effective. He continued to walk towards way point alpha in hope he can rest and take a new dragunov from there.
