The Bad Company 2 beta server situation was similar. It's not a fault of Battlelog that it can't refresh fast enough. There are legitimately more people playing than spaces in test servers, so that's why it's like that. It'll be better on release, guaranteed.

Just played it. Love the gameplay.
Runs like a charm with all the settings on ultra.
Maybe we can get on a server later and make a disco squad?

I don't think Ultra is enabled in beta, it just says ultra, but I think it's same settings as high.
Edit: And I've been trying to get on damn server for past half an hour Q_Q

Yeah, I've read on the EA forums that the textures for example are only at 50% quality to reduce the size of the download. There are also some other theories about the engine flying around there, dunno if they are true but it is confirmed that the game will look better on release. The build we are playing atm is, as far as I know, 3 months old.
As for the squads, yeah, it's a pain in the a**. It balances the members in each squad. So if your friend is in Alpha with 2 other players and you join, you don't get in the last Alpha spot but in a squad that has less then 3 players in it at that moment. Tried forever to get in the same squad with a friend earlier...nearly impossible, and I don't want to think about doing that with more than 3 players D:
And considering a disco-squad. I created a platoon in BattleLog, you can join up and form parties from there to join games together:
