I have already spoken to Cannon and he is not looking to "convert" from Freelancer to a new engine, not yet at least. We will see what happens!

why wont you release your work, make it open source? unless you want all of us to pay 15-40 bucks to play this game i dont see what the point is

Because I'm designing this game engine to run one or in the future, many of my own games.

I haven't played much space games that include mining so I'm not entirely sure on how they all work.

Some ideas to keep it original would maybe be like deploying a mining station device that attaches to a large asteroid and drills into it or something similar. If you plan on adding a player controlled entity, like a character than you can add a mining station on an asteroid, deploy the player to walk on the station and operate the machines and whatnot.

I'm quite curious as to why not just dev an engine for the 'people' side of things? Have a sever for each planet/base/ship/etc. that way there are visual representations of people RP'ing, while at the same time some spacey stuff going. Hypothetically speaking, when someone docks onto something in DiscoFL, the put their character into the sever for whatever place they're at, and BAM, IMMERSION. Just an idea. That way no one has to leave FL, but at the same time you get something neat for RP implementation. Goddess knows it's hard to RP when you're a huge clunking ship.
