The thing which is important about ram is the fast access times. doing it via USB would kinda negate this. PLus check out how much RAM your motherboard can hadle anyway, it may not like going over that limit much.

You get RAM drives. Its a DVD writer that uses the disc like ram memory. Instead of burning info to the disc it uses it to write and re write data

Your best bet is to just get new RAM sticks and put them on the MoBo. Using USB, at no matter what the speed, is going to be much slower than just plugging it directly into the MoBo, or using an expansion card as someone else said.

There was a time when an internal board was used to add additional ram.
not sure how they are priced nowadays--mostly used at present for peripheral devices and maybe server arrays but might be out there.

Most motherboards these days support over a gig...Max for standard boards is 2GB. And the FSB speed is a factor aswell.
Get a 1GB DDR2 stick with a 800MHz FSB.

Most cpus cant handle more than 3G of Ram anyway before losing efficiency.
Then the bottle neck becomes the Mobo and cpu chip.

Wrong.
My CPU at home is cooking on 4GB of RAM with Windows XP 64bit and I'm running just fine. No instability, no loss in efficiency or nothing...
