meh, if you make one for each part of sirius it is the leadership chat MK II and equally useless Wink

3-4 people that bundle the needs and questions by the community and collect answers from the high ups should do quite nicely

Leadership of what? First of all, managers wouldn't be leaders of anything; secondly, the fact that leaders of prominent factions tend to act as sector leaders is part of the problem: all those "high tier" leaders are also devs, admins or mods, which means they end up having little time do actually manage their faction, even less the entire sector. This community needs people that's always available to listen to what's going on.

This is where we have a problem. On the one hand, the best moderator or administrator is one which puts chores before leisure. At the same time, if they spend little to no time playing the game then they're going to have a hard time keeping up-to-date with what actually happens in it. They may well have an excellent understanding of Freelancer in general, but the mod itself and in-game relations change all the while.

Something we might need is more moderators. It could be worthwhile assigning individuals to specific forum categories, such as the role-play sections as a whole, the general mod forums, developer forums (which is already covered by the devs) and the non-mod related forums (to include Flood). Some sections might require more attention so multiple moderators may be needed in those places. Administrators would then need only concern themselves with the categories directly relating to administration. In essence, admin should not have to worry about routine moderation of the forums, but they tend to do that because there simply aren't enough moderators active at a given time.

I'm unsure as to why a bridge between the community and development team would be necessary. Surely the ability is already there for people to pass on their thoughts? If there is a need to create a middle-man in this respect, I don't see why one particular dev can't do that. Maybe there already is somebody suitable, otherwise the dev team could look into it.

The way I see this is that somebody with the common qualities which have been suggested, would be exactly what a moderator will possess. If we're talking about somebody holding all of the said qualities then surely they're good enough to be an administrator. There's no point in giving them basic duties if they're capable of providing so much more to the community. Maybe we need more admin around, not only on the forums but also in-game?

Ofcourse nobody will be grateful.
Nobody will pay the guy for all this work.

So, who wants to take one for the team?

There is a official faction leaders&random friends chat that should have the goal of organizing the wishes and needs of the players as well as itnernal communication - at least for the time i was part in it it had more spam than my spam chats combined and not much useful stuff Wink
Too many cooks ruin the soup - i would personally envision a small group of community managers that might help factions and players to get their game rolling, help out to get lore-relevant activities done and most of all get taken serious when communicating the fears/complaints/wishes/questions with the "real high ups". And yes i think not everyone is equally competent/willing in communication( for whatever reasons) while people like me love nothing more than transparency and clear information......gogogo!

We need a community manager.

RE: We need a community manager. - Switchback - 11-20-2013

I wholeheartedly approve the notion of appointing (Community Vote, none of the Admin pick and choosing) a Community manager.

Also, might as well put my name in the proverbial hat, I could use with something to put on my resume. 8-|

shouldn't this role be fulfilled by the admins?

Quote:To ensure work of Discovery Freelancer server.

lets take a look at this sentence. if you include the definite article, it means that the admins 'ensure the work of the server', meaning that they promise to keep the server up and running - not exactly an objective that needs elucidating, as by definition, that is part and parcel of the work. no server, no community.

we have moderators who watch out for swears, and naughty pictures of girls with their vests off.

if one person did this, it would be a massive task.

one option could be to have the faction leaders/commanders, provide a weekly digest of their faction activity: they can delegate this to individual members of their factions (i.e. flight logs from each member, forumlancer summaries) and then pass them onto the sirius news network. obviously shady dealings need to be referred to obliquely, if at all, but new characters joining factions, outcomes of planned and unplanned events - we do read each others stuff, and we are all interested in new factions, revivals of old ones, etc.[/code]
