The BMM sounds good.
I would be interested in transport (IE trading and so on).
However I don't really want to have a ship provided for me.
I prefer to work my way up ship-wise/money-wise from the bottom, it gives a better sense of achievement for me.
I currently have a Clyesdale and 300k to my name.
Is this ok?

Having played MMORPGs from pretty much the early days, in my experience, forums are usually a very negative portrayal of a game. If you have a forum you will have politics, especially in a busy forum.
I generally ignore that or just step away if I get drawn into it.
I am more of a casual player anyway and not really interested in getting deeply into this game, or any for that matter anymore, so I don't expect I will have any issues.
If it DOES stop being fun, I'll just stop playing and do something else.

It won't kill anyone if you decide to drop off the radar after being accepted into a player faction, but I suggest you stay independant if that's your attitude. No disrespect intended, I just want you do know that player factions usually require active participation on and off the forums. And they usually aren't too amused when a new player throws himself into their faction, then disapears soon after.
You can still have interactions and coorporation with members of your faction as an independant, and most likely have a bit more freedom to do as you like as well.
