What I did to learn it was to watch a youtube playthrough of the game, and just watch what they do in the first few turns to get the ropes
The game dosent do a good job of telling people how to play it... So if you can find someone who plays it to get into a voice chat with ya, and explain whats a good idea to do an why, you'll be pretty well off
Look up Stuff+ or stuff plus on youtube and his endless space playthrough.
Also: can I get a mod to move this to the proper section, as this seems to now be the Endless Space discussion post

Theres a DLC for the game called Disharmony
on Steam, theres a bundle that gets you both the game, and the DLC at once, and you save 5 bucks.
the DLC fixes a buncha problems I had with the original tech tree, and adds a new race
