From what I've read, the main writer for destiny got pissed off because the developers were taking things a different direction than he wanted, so after he quit they botched almost the entire storyline and went with what the game has now.
Apparently the intro we have in destiny was only meant for the exo race originally, so it doesn't make a lot of sense from the human or awoken point of view.

Not as fun as Halo (nothing will beat Halo 2), but still very enjoyable
