Subject: Sigma-59-19 Incident Report, 14.08.823

Bombers from Niigata Star City's 2nd Squadron and interceptors from Sigma Wing were scrambled earlier today in response to what was described as a "battleship-sized scanner signature", with Sigma 19 (no relation to the system) eventually intercepting a Core Mako in Sigma-59, heading towards the Sigma-19 jumphole with an escort of five Core fighters: four Mantas and a Wraith piloted by "Core Guildmaster" Matt Bishop. The battleship's escorts had already jumped to the Sigma-19 system by the time that Kaichou bombers were able to get within range of the battleship, and we made several attempts to deter the battleship from Guild space, including firing several warning shots that caused minor shield damage. All five escort fighters jumped back into 59 at this time, prompting me to return to Niigata briefly to retrieve the Silver Bullet II.

After some bickering that revealed that the Core had no intentions of leaving Guild space, we engaged the enemy, eventually trading two Karasus for 4 Mantas and a Mako. Matt Bishop was able to escape onto the Luxury Liner Hawaii, although I attempted to chase him down on the liner. Difficulties in bringing a suitable weapon for close quarters engagements onto the liner (no guns allowed, according to OSC policy) allowed Bishop to escape back into the woodwork.

Silver Bullet II sustained heavy damage in the fight, including the effective loss of the aftermarket Beagle Active Probe that I had installed in the nose. Silver Bullet II also experienced loss of number one and number two engines due to enemy action, but remained battleworthy and eventually made it back to Sigma-59 with only one engine and thruster power. Silver Bullet II is due for repairs, as it is currently operating at only 24% combat effectiveness, but I've made plans to have a Mako kill mark painted on the side of my ship.

I think it'll go nicely with the others.

Sigma-59 has recently played host to a range of troubles. A group of freelancer ships purchased a bulk amount of helium-3 from Iejima Station. This is no real cause for concern, but I decided to fly with them through Sigma-19, and they proceeded to Sigma-59, converging around Nobeoka Platform. The ships idled here for quite some time for no apparent reason, which aroused my suspicion. I decided to take some scans.

Following a small exchange of words and further idling, the ships all shot off in different directions, which, due to later events, I could only assume was an attempt to evade my watchful eye. I followed a group three ships into a seemingly random direction, taking us on a trip through empty space around Sigma-59. After some travel, I decided to drop off radar and then make my way back to Nobeoka, should they be coordinating a rendezvous when it appeared the tail was shaken.

My manoeuvre paid off. The ships had regrouped at Nobeoka, interestingly having been joined by another Guildmember carrying helium-3. Apparently this was a good photo opportunity. Some more time passed, before I landed to make a quick ship checkup on Nobeoka. Upon launching from the base, a "Bustard" Civilian Carrier had appeared, equipped with an illegal jumpdrive. The loitering while I was present, coupled with the apparent attempts to rid themselves of my presence and then the addition of a ship in direct violation of Guild laws when it appeared they had, implies knowledge of Guild law and conscious intent to break them. I immediately tractored the fuel to disrupt the jump, informed the ships they were breaking Guild law, and that they were to leave the Sigmas immediately, at which time a squadron of Core fighters passed by, one of which was carrying artifacts and alien materials, also breaking Guild law, but at the time no resources were available to challenge this ship. These ships initially offered their assistance, but with fellow Guildmembers arriving to provide support, it was deemed unnecessary.

The freelancers were eventually escorted out of Sigma-59, albeit claiming to be taking their "business" to Samura and taking their time, presumably to be difficult. They eventually left for the Hiroshima system.

It was at this time that the problems with the Core squadron arose, as it was apparently in the company of a "Mako" Core Battleship, spitting in the face of GMG authority. The battleship had been intercepted in Sigma-59, refusing demands it cut its engines and continuing on its set path. When I arrived in the Koryu Cloud, tempers had already flared, but with my negotiation quickly simmered down. The offending Mako was present.

The apparent leader of the squadron claimed to be heading to Outcast space to engage our mutual foes, which would be beneficial to The Guild and undoubtedly permitted were they only snubcraft, but the Core has no authorisation to bring capital vessels into Guild space. Directives were issued instructing the force to turn back, which were outright refused, the Core adamant they continue. Faced with no alternative, the paramilitary engaged at the Sigma-19 jumphole.

Heavy weapons were brought to bear on Guild ships, and Core scored first blood. The battle inevitably spilled into Sigma-19 itself, with the battleship causing major problems. A Chrysanthemum bomber happened to come to our aid, scoring an impressive supernova hit on its first volley. The Core ships were whittled down over time at the cost of another Karasu, until the sole remaining fighter fled and abused the Luxury Liner Hawaii's neutral position to make an emergency landing.

The Mako, the core of the problem was left without escort and slowly and effectively whittled down by the team of bombers present for the engagement and eventually successfully disabled, leaving the score at two Karasus lost with four Mantas and a Mako neutralised.

Efforts to locate Bishop were unsuccessful. This unprecedented show of aggression is major cause for concern, and Core movements need to be monitored.

An Outcast snubcraft squadron was detected in the Sigma-13 Crow Nebula, evidently having engage a number of Bundschuh ships, identifying themselves as belonging to the Vereinigte Widerstandsarmee paramilitary. Due to the highly incendiary nature of the situation, visual logs are minimal, however, extensive data on one hostile ship in particular was deemed to be of importance. This ship was an oddity, apparently in the possession of dangerous alien weaponry and special equipment, as well as an unknown power source.

This equipment gave it a vital edge, with a Bundschuh fighter succumbing to its firepower in equal combat. The ship, in critical condition from its earlier confrontation, was then disabled, saving the remaining Bundschuh ship, and its power source apparently salvaged. It should also be noted that a Hogosha ship was detected in the vicinity, but turned and disappeared into the nebula before it could be destroyed.

Shortly after this incident, a communication was directed to Guild channels, supposedly from a splinter fleet of the Outcasts. This appears to be a trap or ploy of sorts, and will go unanswered.

In addition, the Okinawa system yesterday played host to an unidentified ZBT-1002 "Whale" Zoner Deep Space Transport. A cloaking device was installed and a large quantity of iridium was apparently being delivered to Planet Miura. When questioned on their identity, the pilot gave vague answers, none of them particularly conclusive. They appeared friendly, docking to acquire a gift of sake, despite my protests.

When it became clear the conversation would remain unproductive, the ship was allowed to continue, and departed to the Sigma-19 jumpgate.

Both of these incidents will be investigated immediately.

In a highly important development, the Archangels Fighter Club is hereby banned from Guild space, and Newport Station, located in Sigma-13, is now to be blockaded by the Guild paramilitary in preparation for a siege and eventual invasion and takeover.

The Archangels have a history of causing trouble for The Guild, with all incidents apparently committed by individual members reported to the Club's leadership. The private channel dedicated to disclosing the details of smuggling, failure to comply with Guild directives, and outright aggression can be found on neural net channel 133294.

The most recent and final provocation, one that that we can not stand for, is the illegal development of Newport. The repressurisation of Yanagi Depot was undesirable but tolerated until now as it had not been responsible for causing any major issues, unlike its predecessor. However, following a conversation with the Archangels, who claim to be the new administrators of the base, this is no longer the case and as such it has been deemed necessary that the semi-derelict hulk be seized by force as soon as possible.

Consequently, all AFC ships detected in the Sigma systems are to be destroyed upon detection, and no cargo is permitted to reach Newport Station.

Guild docking protocols are in the process of being updated. In the meantime, all paramilitary asserts are to be on high alert.

Subject: Suspicious Traffic

An unusually high number of transports have been detected utilising the Sigma-13, Sigma-19 and Omicron Beta jumpholes to traverse Guild space.

The first was a Border World Exports Shetland, happened upon while moving towards the tradelanes in Sigma-13, its trajectory indicating it had entered the system via the Sigma-19 jumphole. While not a particularly common sight, this encounter is of potential importance when put into context with later events.

A freelancer Serenity was the second transport seen, scanned when exiting the Sigma-19 jumphole. This was also deemed to be of little interest, and the pilot continued on their way unhindered with their cargo hold full of h-fuel.

Sighted for the second time was the first transport, this time en route to Sigma-19 and in possession of a large amount of industrial hardware, which is used in the construction of spaceborne structures and likely sourced from neighbouring Rheinland. Ships carrying such cargo must divulge their location when questioned by any Guildmember, in order to prevent the development of unauthorised installations in Guild space.

The answer was Iejima Station, apparently on the advice of Interspace Commerce. How this may have occurred is unknown, as while Iejima Station is currently undergoing an expansion, there are no active contracts with Interspace, and certainly not Bowex. Nevertheless, the shipment was successfully accompanied to Iejima, and the transport remunerated. It then departed to the Honshu system, with a cargo of helium-3 purchased from the Iejima commodity dealer.

While returning to Sigma-13, a single message was received on a local frequency from the aforementioned freelancer. Communication was not possible as both ships were in the process of using the systems' connection. However, this is notable as it shows the freelancer had recently returned to Sigma-19, at this time for reasons unknown.

It became fully apparent that something was afoot when the Zoner Whale marked as Nostalgia, previously observed acting suspiciously, was passed in Sigma-19, at the Sigma-13 jumphole. Previously inquiries have been inconclusive, but the behaviour of this ship may shed some light on its pilot and their motives, as well as that of the pilots previously encountered on this patrol. This one impromptu rendezvous was a short one as the empty ship and I parted ways.

DelBoy was the next to appear on scanners, this time apparently en route from the Omicron Beta jumphole, the first to be detected utilising this connection. He was later caught up with in Sigma-13, admitting to have come from Outcast space, which indicates he had been freely passing between Guild space, Omicron Beta, and perhaps even further.

However, merely travelling to and from Guild and Outcast and Corsair space, or even bringing items not declared as contraband from the Omicrons is not explicitly violation of Guild law. This is a loophole that shall be closed at next notice, lest it be abused by those wishing to do The Guild harm. Options being considered include a full embargo in both directions and a complete ban on all travel.

Pentultimately, it was a Zoner "Nephilim" Colony Ship to enter Sigma-19, from Sigma-17. Explicit violation of Guild law aside, its intended destination is the second example in rapid succession of a conspicuous technicality.

Finally, "Nostalgia" was interdicted at the Omicron Beta jump hole, in possession of a full load of industrial materials. While not conclusive, this implies the ships following unusual routes through Guild space were acting in league with the Outcasts. "Nostalgia" claimed to be travelling to Omicron Lost to supply an Order project. The Guild has no data on this system and will soon contact the Order to verify these claims in an effort to further discern this person's actions and motives. In the meantime, the cargo was confiscated and the transport ejected from Guild space, which were complied with.

Unauthorised attempts to dock with Iejima Station were denied due to this being a both failure to comply with Guild directives and a potential security risk to the base. Some of the confiscated cargo was later utilised in the upgrade project taking place on the storage depots.

The possibility of a new Outcast installation must be investigated, beginning with survey teams entering Omicron Beta. Should any such project be located, it must be hindered even at great cost.

Since the previous report of suspicious traffic heading through Sigma-19 to Omicron Beta, these transports have continued unabated. However, despite past offending ships providing no clues other than "the Omicrons" to their final destination, a mission into Omicron Beta has led to promising results.

Two transports belonging to Bretonia Mining and Fabrication were detected in Omicron Beta, the first being BMF|Homeros and the second BMF|CargoStar, which appeared to be damaged. These ships were quite clearly guests of Ruiz Station, the main Outcast establishment in the system. The repair and apparent decoupling manoeuvres conducted by the previously wounded BMF|CargoStar implies it was granted sanctuary on the Outcast station, suggesting a neutral to friendly relationship between the two groups, which is most concerning. This implication also lends credence to the suspicion of the Bretonian ships previously detected with base materiel in the Sigmas being in league with our enemies.

A soft questioning of these ships proved fruitless, and they decided to leave Omicron Beta under the "assistance" of a GMG battle transport. They eventually jumped to the Honshu system and proceeded further into Kusari space, claiming to be moving to the New Tokyo system. They were not pursued further.

Fortunately, thanks to the trajectory of the BMF ships when they were caught at Ruiz, it was possible to partially extrapolate the direction they had come from. Due to the ambiguous nature of their flight path, it took several sectors of search patterns to finally stumble across a discernibly fresh construct in the system. This modular installation was already protected by a weapons platform and so it was deemed vital to retreat in order to ensure to longevity of the Garanchou freighter used. and the data acquired on its mission. Fortunately, the location of the so-called Catania Station was saved to its navigational systems, and later uploaded to the central computer on Iejima Station.

It is clear that this is not the end of the matter, and offensive operations that would be previously infeasible must be planned and conducted, in order to ensure the security of the Sigma systems.

Subject: Suspicious Traffic, Artifact Smuggling

Cargo scanning and interdiction operations were a success some days ago. The first incident involved two freelancer Serenity transports, kolbenBfarm and Goombay, both in possession of illegal artifacts. Initially detected at the Honshu jumpgate in Sigma-19, both ships jumped to Aomori Station. There they were informed of their violation of Guild law and initially appeared to be complying, but then attempted to flee. Their ships were destroyed, and part of their cargo salvaged and transported to Iejima Station for storage.

The second incident began at the same location as the first, involving an Orbital Spa and Cruise transport also brimming with artifacts. This ship failed to stop when ordered, and it too fled to Honshu. The transport attempted to escape and was subsequently destroyed. Again, the salvaged cargo was moved to Iejima Station.

Pooling these artifacts with those confiscated on previous patrols has left a sizeable stock of cargo to be fenced on. It has been released to the station's commodity dealer, and Kishiro Technologies will be notified so their transports may legally conduct runs into Kusari space.

With the discovery of Catania Station in Omicron Beta, the reason for much of the suspicious traffic of the two previous has become clear. The latest incident came with the detection of a Planetform, Incorporated transport in Sigma-19, transporting a haul of nanomembrane filters. The captain of the ship claimed to be going to Omicron Beta, but refused to disclose their final location. This is violation of Guild law.

Despite this, the captain agreed to be convinced to sell the cargo on Iejima, where The Guild can put it to good use. The station has received 4,000 units of nanomembrane filters for a total of 7,000,000 credits. The Planetform ship then departed for the Honshu system with a hold of helium-3.

A freelancer was encountered in the Honshu system and sent greetings. Their attitude to the response was most poor, but of little importance.

The problem arose when it was again encountered, this time in Sigma-19 and in the possession of contraband. They protested against, but eventually complied with directives to transfer the offending cargo. The freelancer then departed to the Honshu system, nontheless amidst claims of filing a complaint with the Republic of Kusari.

Given the poor behaviour displayed by the pilot of this Anki freighter, their movements in Guild space should be monitored to ensure compliance with all local laws.

Subject: Combat Report

The Vereinigte Widerstandsarmee recently contacted The Guild to raise the alarm regarding a hostile ship in Sigma-59. Three Guild ships were scrambled to investigate.

Upon arrival, the ship was encountered, sporting a scrambled IFF, and instructed to cut its engines. Indisputably alien signatures were emanating from the Wraith, which was utilising a great deal of Nomad equipment. Its pilot insisted on defying Guild directives ordering it to stop. An Order cruiser, the VWA cruiser Ostara and a VWA Wraith were already on the scene.

Guildmember Hiroshi requested permission to engage the ship in single combat, which was granted. After he gained the upper hand in his duel, the hostile ship chose to self destruct, possibly to evade capture or salvage of its equipment.

The Order and VWA ships then claimed to be heading to the Omicrons. Guild ships assumed a flanking position to escort them to their destination. Part of the discussion on the way revolved around The Order's use of revolutionary cloak disruption technology. The group proceeded through Sigma-59 and eventually reached the Omicron Zeta jump hole. Given The Guild's lack of knowledge of the system, our escort duty provided the opportunity to learn more of the local terrain. Upon emergence from the jump hole, the party entered a nearby nebula, eventually reaching another jumphole. Interestingly, there was an alien presence in close proximity.

The second jumphole deposited our ships in another nebula in the Omicron Mu system, where a trail of navigation buoys marked the path to an Order station. Security was high, with the presence of a battleship and several weapons platforms. With the escort complete and vital data gathered, Guild ships returned to the Sigmas.

The final encounter involved a Unioner ship in Sigma-17. Being an aggressive band of terrorists who would love nothing more than the restoration of Imperial Rheinland and the grudges it would hold, it would be prudent to immediately ban this organisation from Guild space. The pilot of this ship, equipped with a cloaking device, refused to cooperate with any directives issued, and was subsequently engaged, before self destructing in the atmosphere of Planet Kurile.

The day's events have made several things clear:

  1. The alien menace must be addressed directly in order to ensure the security of Guild space.
  2. Were the VWA and Order cruisers in Sigma-59 in fact hostile ships, the Guild assets available would have only just been sufficient in neutralising the threat they posed, especially considering it would have involved combat in open space. It is clear that Guild doctrine must be updated in order to deal with the modern landscape in the Sigma systems and the new challenges it presents. A new chapter in GMG history will be opened: the development of original heavy assets.
  3. The use of revolutionary anti-cloak technology witnessed in the Order's possession must be evaluated for potential introduction to the GMG paramilitary.
  4. The violent movement calling themselves the Unioners must be kept clear of Guild space,
  5. The navigational data acquired will be invaluable in cataloguing the changes to the Sigma systems caused by the last ion storm, and exploratory efforts must be stepped up immediately.

Iejima Station is again under threat from the Corsairs. A heavy fighter was detected near the station, which had its shields raised. This was likely a scout testing the security of the area, and was quickly despatched.

The following day, a message was directed to my personal channel.

Guildmember Ravis is tasked with formulating a final reply to the communication and is authorised to post it.

The crew of Iejima is on alert and has all the resources required to withstand an attack from hostile capital vessels. However, it is clear that its defences must be expanded. Guild engineers will be tasked with the construction and activation of spaceborne weapons platforms to provide coverage to Guild assets in the vicinity of the station.

In addition, this is further proof that GMG is in need of larger warships to complement its snubcraft and gunboats in order to ensure the security of the Sigma systems. Several options are under consideration.
