just block https://apps.skype.com in network and sharing center>internet properties, that'll stop it loading it, which should free some memory.

Using downgraded versions as far as it will allow you to connect without upgrading seems to be the solution if you can't buy more memory/processing power.
I've noticed that Skype is less laggy for me, but also more memory intensive over the years.
