Not a new idea, but sadly it was never discussed in detail as far as I can recall, I don't think it ever reached the Dev team either.

The absolutely least played faction in the game is probably the Maquis. But if you want to actually have fun while still contributing to the server's activity, make a Unioner.

Making a freelancer is something I've tried but I found myself (multiple times) without much to do. Making 1+ characters per house is something I unfortunately don't have the will or time which is why I'm trying to find somewhere where making a character could be beneficial.
Durandal, by Unioner I assume you mean the Unioners Rheinland faction, not the Unione Corse, correct?
The Maquis on the other hand would be interesting. Imagine this: biggest plot twist ever: the Maquis isn't a faction, it's a man!
Birdtalon, now that's a name that resonates a little haha. I've been well, figured I'd try disco again. I have an Order character (and a trader which are my current two) so I'll be in Order space every now and then.
For whatever reason it never occurred to me that the map being 2D makes little sense. A 3D map of Sirius and Gallia would definitely be interesting, if possible. Maybe someone should try to make a 3D map in some random programme to help everyone visualize what it could look like (I'd volunteer but I don't think I know enough about the systems nor some programme to do this).
I'll head back into the single player and try a few Gallic factions and the smaller Rheinland ones. I don't mind doing missions at all to spend time, it's what I'm doing on my Order character, so my choice will probably depend on how I like the ships and the looks of the systems. Thanks again!
