Maybe someone who plays a BH can correct me, but I think the difference is that Mercs are more willing to take on paid escort missions (ie "protect me from whatever attacks me during Journey X") whereas Bounty Hunters tend to be "lawful assassins" (ie "I really don't like Person Y, please go and tear them a new thrust port")

I might point out one thing.
BH Tag, Merc ID is MM's thang.
Does that mean you are stepping in MM's turf? I don't really think so. Separate Identity, roles, and RP. MM is also Bretonian based. But we do, er, assassinations, which you don't do.
I favour no tag, but keeping it that way can be a pain.

Just swopping out the ID would be the easiest option of all, becoming mercs working for bretonia. However, I'm hard-pressed to see the distinction between the end results of mercs working for bret and the military-ID'd WT working for bret.
It does mean practically the same thing... another BAF, which was shot down pretty heavily.

Don't want to step on the MM's toes, and their RP includes unlawful killings, which runs counter to our own ethos.
I'm also in favour of Tagless - I know its a pain to keep, but it then removes the possibility of a say, RM saying 'This is Rheinland, what is a BAF doing here?', for example.
I also like the Civy ship-line idea... *sigh* guess I gotta go trade some more to buy the boys new toys. Ah well, its a good job i LIKE trading innit?

I would also agree that tagless is the way to go. Might be a bit on the difficult side at times but hey, no one ever said being a merc was easy. If you happen to acquire a tag, I'd say make it the Bretonnia Police since your operating from there. I would say stay away from BH because there is a distinct difference between them and Mercs.

It's hard to keep no IFF, honestly.
Normally I would have said "Bounty Hunter Tag" - but then I noticed interspace on the list and thought... hey, interspace is actually a fricken awesome faction for mercs. Interspace insures all cargo shipments in sirius (or most of them), and in more dangerous areas would probably take payment to escort trade ships with combat vessels.
