For those of you unfamiliar with the acronym, it supposedly was used by American soldiers, sailors and/or marines during World War II with the following meaning: Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition which was the mild version; Replace the first word to get the obscene version. Another similar acronym was SNAFU which I think got started in an American comic strip: Situation Normal -- All Fouled Up; Of course, one word could be replaced to create the obscene version.
