RepEx tried it with Black Talon but that went under for a number of reasons, a major one being nobody wanted/needed a full scale military force. Houses (inRP and with the factions) have a fairly good playerbase and don't really need another group to join in the ganking. Corporations typically build a military wing to protect their other investments, not for sale.

hmmmm, perhaps the best way to approach it would be to create a new Corp. and model them after these mega corporations like:
Umbrella from the resident evil corporation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbrella_Corporation
or
the corporation from the Alien series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weyland-Yutani
lawful on the surface while dipping their fingers into everything, some of which would be less than lawful. i guess it would be considered a corrupt corporation?
they would have small but highly advanced military group that were flawlessly commited to the company.
i think this route would leave a lot more options open and keep the act of playing one interesting.
again, i'm just brainstorming

anyway, i like the idea. Imagine the group being hired to keep a certain system pirate free. Like if traders would like that system clean of pirates, the group needs to recieve at least 150 mill (just an example) from all the people together (something like 75 traders pays 2 mill, then the army for hire will try to keep that system clean of any pirate activity

The Estate seems like it is close to what i had in mind. Although something about having the main guy doing the RP talking makes it seem like a small business.
perhaps have a spokesman for the group speak....just a suggestion.
does the Estate delve into the "less than lawful" area of business?

The Estate delves in everything.
It operates on a very 'need to know' basis. Basically, you know what you are doing and how things are going overall, but not who you are working with neccessarily.
However, the security side of things will be forming soon. Essentially Mercenaries with a good structure that work for larger groups only, as your idea was about really.
