Most of my characters have some sort of out of the ordinary story behind them. 2 of them are admittedly "superhuman", but one of those characters doesn't exist on any server yet, and the other doesn't really show such truths while flying. Another coming character is a sort of super-soldier type situation, but again, that can't really be shown in game (unless I can find a PvP switch on my head).

Most of my characters are average enough, though, in use.

Having characters with overtly superior capabilities is powergaming. It looked down upon.

I have no special character:PThe most dramatic event in my Bowex bio was when my parent slapped me and I left home. All my characters are just ordinary, even my admiral.

I also don't think there is a sole "goal" for most factions. There is probably something they are more focusing towards, but a faction (be it military or unlawfuls) is a complex beast. I am sure there are people in most of the factions working towards the greater ideas.

Player-driven environment changes... that would need a hell lot of work. With the simple taking of teritory, the system needs to be extensively modded. That's probably the most demanding task in mod development.

i understand there isnt a sole goal for a faction, but when you narrow it down there isnt a ton of them either. Lets change this game to be the current US for example. Our military is fighting a war against terrorism, our militiary is not roaming our streets fighting criminals, their focus is our current war situations. However we do have police roaming our streets stopping criminals, FBI CIA police all of them fighting the war against terrorism here in our own airports and borders with the national guard helping. In game we have every single lawful ship with a gun on it fighting criminals, and primarily focused on fighting criminals. The LNS all sitting in New York where there is no real RP'ed threat at the moment. Rheinland Military never outside of its New Berlin system. If we RP'ed the US situation in this manner, we would never have any progression on the situation with Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan...although those are without a doubt the major concerns.

Yeah re-modding a system to have flipped sides would take some work. Thats why it would be a slow process. LNS comes in the Jump Gate one week. Next Week Rheinland tries to push them out and fails. Next week They push forward to Hamburg with another large fight. Next week Rheinland again mounts an offensive and pushes them back. Not that either side has a set win or lose in store, i would think it would be funner to leave the victory up to the outcome of an unscripted fight.

The territory wouldnt even have to flip unless Liberty won the fights across the system which could take months if you work it out right. But in the least, its like you are creating your own new story content without having to wait for a new mod update. And how fun would it be for the in game news at the Bar to have purpose? Grab a cup of coffee and read whats been going on as the stories RP progresses, or gets pushed back, weekly. Throw in player names for distinguished events making people want to get more involved.

Bahh i know thats a ton of work, but omg if it happened.

CliffG, I think what you're aiming for is called a story arc : an ongoing story that unfolds over the course of multiple chapters or episodes. A couple of dozen people were involved in attempting to create one last summer for the entire server, involving each house and finally culminating in one grand climax, but it essentially died out due to lack of participation and interest.

I have always thought that they were the best route to stimulating ongoing interest in a faction, but the creative effort involved makes them difficult to put together when authored by just one person, and the logistics of multiple people's input hampers cooperative efforts. The one we tried last summer involved dozens of hours of planning before anything hit the server, largely because having so many people involved in brainstorming ideas creatives an extremely slow development process (as anyone involved in 4.85 development can attest to).

I would love to see factions cooperate on this, because it would provide opportunities for ongoing creative exploration as well as involving non-player faction characters more deeply into the npc faction's roleplaying. The primary obstacle is finding the right balance between both encouraging and limiting creative input so that you create something interesting without spending more time in development than in presentation.

well.

people want to be alien mutant ninja cyborg pirate assassins cause they feel their impack on the community is insignificant or ignored most of the time.

I have nothing against people who want to be alien mutant ninja cyborg pirate assassins if they do it right, and entertain the community.

Think of Mon'Star, the Phantoms, The Coalition, The Harvesters, The Prospector, the Colonial Remnant and other figures that tend to bring some variety to what simple NPC'c do.

Just asking, how would you powergame this sort of thing? I doubt anyone is going to type *kills you with psychic alien powers*

Stronger Factions - Ironwatsas - 01-21-2009

I can say that most of my characters are 'normal' enough. I.E. have no real superhuman abilities, of anything that over the top.

The EXCEPTION is Ironwatsas, who is pretty much exactly a super ninja cyborg mutant telepathic alien pirate assassins, minus the mutant and alien parts. Thing is, there is an important RP reason for this. He used to be a meaty human mercenary, was blown up by the KNF, rebuilt into a Robotic body, and now seeks to unilaterally conquer Sirius on behalf of the entity that rebuilt him.

Thing there is, He dosen't LIKE the entity that rebuild him that much, and has his own agenda. While as a Robot he is nigh indestructable, armed to the teeth, and can teleport, integrate with computer systems, and take on entire infantry battallions alone. Though he rarely has to, as he has has his own army and his allies in the GC and NovaPG to work for him.

Though, the fact that he is a robot makes him largely a slave of his evil 'benefactors', and preculdes him advancing his own plans. Ultimately, he seeks to clone his old human body, and free himself from total Cybernetic control, and increase his relations with the Golden Chrysanthemums. Though that would significantly lower his capabilities to about that of a normal human being (with special forces training and some cybernetic and genetic enhancements, but not as extreme as he is currently).

Does this make him powergame'y? Perhaps. However it is critical to the background of Watsas and the Consortium as a faction. I consider him well RPed, if a bit eccentric (this is intentional). Though he may have equivelent to super-powers, he rarely uses them and actively seeks to get rid of said powers to further his larger agenda.
