Does a Faction's Rank-Limitations keep you away from joining? - Stoat - 01-26-2009

It certainly wouldn't keep me away from joining. I joined the factions I joined because of the structures in place. It was more for the RP to be gained than for access to any particular type of ship.

I'd also say the factions are there for those who want to get seriously involved in some of the RP that can shape the Discovery universe.

Would you join a faction with fighter-limitations? (like VHFs limited to a certain rank)
Yes, but I would create some indies to get the ships right away

Would you join a faction with cap-limitations? (like GB limited to a certain rank)
Yes, but only if I like the RP/its players VERY much.

Personally, I never see a reason to restrict members from using VHFs/LFs/Bombers. Now if you have 2 VHFs available, I'd understand if one is restricted. Sort of like if VF used both Scimitars and Lokis.. Scimis be standard and Lokis be restricted by rank.. But there should always be one of every fighter/bomber class available to a new recruit. Capital ships should be restricted from the very beginning, of that I agree. But why restrict, say, a Lane Hacker from a Sabre until the rank of X? Yes, it gives him something to work towards, but if thats the only thing you can come up with to motivate your members to work harder, than something is terribly wrong.

This is a really interesting topic. As a faction leader, the idea behind restricting the ships in the XA is to filter out the people who wouldn't be particularly dedicated.

I recently instituded the same idea in the LN. I put the new guys in Executioners to start with and they fly in that ship for eight hours (same as the XA) before getting a promotion and a VHF (Guardian or Avenger) and bomber (havok:().

I have seen a massive improvement in people will to roleplay with these ideas in place. Neither faction is all about the pvp, and both are based very firmly in Liberty and thus people need to get used to exploding, a lot, and often for very stupid reasons.

Not only does it get people used to the idea that winning and losing are not that important it also gives people a sence of achievment and a trophy for that. In the XA you'll see very few people in taiidans (the indy xenos seem to use rather a lot) but only the most trusted and high ranked member of the XA get the taiidan bomber at the moment (next mod we'll be switching them all out for civvy's anyway). This is a symbol of all that they have acheived in the faction, and keeps a lot of people motivated.

I'm all for it in if I'm to be honest. I think it keeps the interested and dedicated guys motivated.

Restriction = challenge
Challenge forces team play and inventiveness
Team play and inventiveness = fun.

I dont mind any lowbie ship flying, my time in a XA Hawk was.. interesting, ive never been crazy for PVP, though it is very much the core of the game.

Rank restrictions on ships isnt much of a bother, though I do have a BAF dunkirk, i'm a total VHF whore to the end, not horribly bothered if im not allowed a Bomber/gunboat, infact, i'd be glad. (so this part doesnt really effect me).
