there is a mayor flaw in your reasoning there sindroms, when you say 80% i do hope your kidding, cause if you look at modern day nations you will see that ONLY ONE nation still has a real battleship, and even that one is outdated and virtually decommissioned, it only serves as a reserve ship. But several navy's have aircraft carriers, not because they have giant cannons or missile systems, but because they are movable airstrips which gives your the ability to maintain aircover over much larger area's then when you only have land based airstrips
Secondly your reasoning that fighters and bombers only serve as protection for your other capital ships is a reasoning used by most nations at the start of WW 2, then with the attack on pearl harbor the Japanese showed that planes can do more than just protect your fleet, they are more efficient at attacking and destroying enemy cap ships.
Also, compare the production of lets say 10 fighterbombers with the production of a cruiser. The aircraft are much cheaper, easier to make, take allot less time to build, require less people to operate them at peak efficiency,... When the 2 (fighters and cruiser) are going to fight, it's easy to predict who is going to win. The cruiser might be able to take down lets say half the number of fighters, but by doing so it will have sustains massive amounts of damage, while the fighters still have half there original numbers, so allot less casualty's,...
Facts are capital ships today and probably in the future will most likely faint away, except the ones that are related to aircraft (carriers, destroyers as carrier escorts,...). In FL it's just the same, the capital ships serve as movable launch platforms so that your fighters and bombers have a much greater range.
