+1/-1 encourages effortless supporting/opposing of topics. Rather than intellectually raising a point like I am here, many would simply -1 your suggestion without giving you their reasoning or constructive feedback. Good suggestions find their way to the yellows; the question is if the yellows agree with it or not. The community is small enough that there aren't so many suggestions that they become lost.
While I don't think it would make it cancerous, I believe it would result in an overall degradation of the quality of discussions. Reddit is cancer for other reasons, don't worry.

Just adding upvoting without downvoting would save time, not clog the thread with “I agree with X” comments and not cause an outrage because downvoting wouldn’t exist.

one time I've seen on respawn forums that they have only 2 buttons, "Insightful" and "Awesome". Maybe this way could be better than +1 -1. Or only one button. Btw, only a suggestion, no opinions or preferences for me
