LESSON ABOUT SPORTSMANSHIP - Laowai - 02-12-2009

As far as i'm concerned i don't overly care what Freelancer was originally made to be - FPS in space or whatever.
What i do believe is that Discovery Freelancer on this server is first and foremost a Role Play game and a "shooting" game second.

Respect is not that hard a commodity to have because its one that most people want personally; its simple transferrance - or the old biblical quote of "Do unto others". You get respect here by earning it and there are many ways to do that, showing other people respect is one way.

PVP on its own, choosing the best ships and best guns, showing up 4vs1 to a fight is not.

PVP your way all over the place with little observance of Role play = No respect, because PVP is not what is valued here - Winning at all costs = No respect, again because PVP is not what is valued here. Arm your ship with an awesome combination of weapons that can "Gank" everyone - No Respect, because PVP is not what is valued here.

Role Play well and PVP well = Respect, because Role Play is what is valued here, PVP is a side dish.

Thats my 2c....

Nice post Kingvaliant.

In a sence Laowai you're right. "Do unto others..." is a pretty good motto. Be it in weapons loadout, pvp arrangements, refrianing from powergaming type RP.

A lot of roleplay uses PVP as a tool. Sirius is largely at war, which provides a lot of scope for plotlines and interest, and also gives people the scope to blow each other up.

Now this does seem like the roleplay empahsis kinda rules out the fair play aspect, but infact it does. You don't win at roleplay by attacking people with overwhealming force. You win at being a jerk instead. Roleplay your characters on the server, have fun, but not at the expence of anyone else's fun.

As I said in my earlier post. There are plenty of way of roleplaying your way into sitting out an unbalanced fight, which while requiring you to think on your feet a little, can both add RP depth and balance a fight out... Best of both worlds anyone?

Master Patriot, I do believe the room for shooting yourself in the foot is elsewhere. Kindly avail yourself of it's use.

"back to topic"

Respect is everything, if you respect mother nature she will respect you
dont expect Respect from evryone, respect is something you got to earn,
I always show respect to every-one and it paid of so far for me,
also you cant demand Respect from any-one, you can ask for respect
but yet you got to earn it (ex: You are an High ranking officer, and recruits show you respect, why? you have earned your rank with long service, but even you started as an recruit one day, the respect you gave then, pays of later)

and king I hope all can learn of this,

I beleive this thread is about respect Patriot. Little of it is earned by being offensive.

There has been a lot of talk about this lately which makes me think that perhaps this lack of sportsmanship is becoming an issue. Or perhaps that it is becoming a more fashionable perspective to have.

Either way, I think threads that address the issue without pointing finger, (as this thread does) add an awful lot to the cause.

keep displaying sportsmanship. don`t become bitter because others don`t have the decensy.

sportsmanship is VERY important on this server.

Finally, another worthy Post.
I absolutely agree with you kingvaillant.
''SPORTSMANSHIP'' is something that should also be seen as some kind of a rule to follow, because it is in the first thing what causes the real rules to be broken by a player accidentally or not.
There is no rule that is perfect, any rule can be abused by a player for his/her own advantage and ''sportsmanship'' is something that fills this ''hole''.
