Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Orin - 04-04-2009 I'm using a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I can't find any firewall option with Avira, and I've got all Windows firewalls off, as well as the Defender. So basically, my router might be using the port that needs to be open? On this computer, my XP desktop, I'm using the same router with a WUSB100 wireless card, and I've never had one problem. Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - ugliestmoose - 04-04-2009 Ok, what this most likely means is that you have a dynamic IP address as opposed to a static one. An IP address is exactly what it sounds like - a unique location that receives and sends data. Every computer has its own IP address that is it's internet ID, basically. The problem with routers is they use dynamic IP addresses, meaning that they give you a temporary IP that you use for a while, then they change it about every month or so. They do this because it allows you to hook up a router to any computer and get connected without much setting up required. You need to assign a static IP that doesn't change; otherwise, you would have to go through this procedure everytime it was switched. Unfortunately this is not a quick thing to do and I'm not the most qualified person to be explaining it all to you. Here's the guide I got all my answers from, hopefully it helps: http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm When (and if) you get around to doing all the steps it goes through, you will have a shiny static IP address and then you can go here to do the actual port forwarding: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers...ncer_Server.htm This whole process is pretty time intensive and took me several hours to get all worked out (though I'm kinda slow:)), so don't get discouraged. You may even learn some useful techno babble while you're at it. Disclaimer: If this does not solve your problem...well, sorry for wasting a crapload of your time:) Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Orin - 04-04-2009 Well, when I work myself up to trying anything again, I'll try that. So pissed off right now. -.- Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - sempai17 - 04-04-2009 I'd sugest port forward, but that requires you to have an ethernet cable directly to the router. I went to radioshack and bought 20 foot cable. reaches to the most important places in my house, my room and my living room. I also have a 7 foot extension cable. as for the wireless thing, I'll say something when i figure that out myself Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Orin - 04-04-2009 20 foot cable wouldn't even reach. Not an option. Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Robert.Fitzgerald - 04-04-2009 I don't understand why you need any "port forwarding" done. I also have a dynamic IP, using a wireless router, vista laptop. I didn't have any connection issues apart from AVG interfering with Freelancer. My issues were solved by reinstalling, and running absolutely everything "as admin". Alternatively, you can turn off User Access Control so it'll run as admin automatically. Can you post exactly what the error message that pops up when you attempt to connect? Also, does it appear automatically or after a few seconds of "please waiting"? Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Orin - 04-04-2009 No, I've done all of that. It gives me the "could not connect, probably caused by server going offline" typical notice the very instant I try. Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Knucklehead - 04-04-2009 You mentioned that it sees the servers in the list. Does it give a ping rating, or just a "????"? If it does show a number for Ping, what range does it show up as (for both Discovery RP and Discovery USA)? Have you tried connecting to both servers? Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - ugliestmoose - 04-04-2009 As far as what Sempai said, I don't think that's exactly right. You don't need a wired connection to enable port forwarding, just a static IP address. Robert, it may depend on what router you're using as not all of them automatically block ports 2300-400. I, too, tried reinstalling multiple times and running everything as admin (though I turned that abominable UAC off right away) to no avail. Trying to install 4.85 on a Vista laptop - Knucklehead - 04-04-2009 Come to think of it, Port Forwarding isn't needed, as long as NAT is on. NAT takes care of all of that automatically. Now, if you were running a publicly available server, then Port Forwarding or a DMZ machine are needed. |
