RE: DLL woes - Ventoline - 12-20-2025

Hi developers,

same problem here, I am afraid. Clicking on the server name in multiplayer simply crashes the game.

I hope this issue can be solved, thanks,

Vent

This patch also broke my game, and the game of several other people I'm aware of.

A clean installation doesn't fix the issue.

some person found a fix that helped many people consistently so far

Here are the steps I did:
move directplay8.dll from EXE folder to somewhere else (desktop or whatever)
Launch game (scaling will be messed up) and try to join multi. Game will crash.
Change render settings from dx9 to dx8 then back to dx9
Copy the dll back to EXE and launch game

This worked for me. First load took a while though to get into character select.

EDIT: Actually every load when switching accounts takes a long, long time. Far longer than the last patch. Switching characters on the same account is quick after the intital long load after the fix. Something still isn't right lol. But it works, if slow.

I repeated steps and it's solve the issue. Now all good.
Thanks a lot to R3curce and to darkwind!

I'll be damned! It worked. Thank you very much!

It is a relief, I have been addicted to Freelancer since 2002.

Best,

All good.
I should note that this time I didn't click "Launch Game" immediately after the launcher was patched. Instead, I closed the launcher window. I rebooted my PC (just in case). Then, of course, I launched the game. All good, no error, no crush.
Thanks.
