usually I hang in space and I check NPCs names, and then I combine something.
on. eg. : if I want to make Outcasts char, I am going to the Malta orbit etc.
I also use reshacker software to read nameresouce.dll. There are all names, surnames for NPCs. And I check if such surname is present on the forum : stories, bio. If it is free, it is mine. This way I get FL-ish name.
Second way - name from book/film.

What I did a while back. I know a Jason, I know a Moore... it works. Also, fakenamegenerator.com helps.
As for character, what Marburg says sounds like it would work, though I mostly just daydream and ideas just come to me.
But yeah, Nomads are fun:)
