The following link is to a "Tech Use in Sirius" spreadsheet. It is meant for guns and the like, but I think that you could use it as a guideline for your situation as well.

generally, how i see it, generic pirates in liberty and bretonia are best suited using the pirate line (rogue/molly), in Rhienland, borderworlds, or the arbeiter (assuming the current model becomes generic pirate only while the unioners get their own shipline), in kusari, eagles would fit, or perhaps borderworld/BD line. or, you could use a zoner ship, junker ship, or a civilian ship, though a bit of background RP goes a long way.

I think the name of the Conference Gunboat speaks for its' self. It's obviously not designed to be a piracy ship... Think of Pirate ships, they are always named something fear-inspiring, like "Bloodhound" and "Dagger"
Who's gonna fear a ship named "Conference"?
I'd suggest making a forum story for your Gunboat, and chose one that best suits your characters' origins as a pirate. Start with making a request to the official faction of the Gunboat you wish to acquire. Post it in the diplomatic channel and go from there.

wrong, ship comes first, story second.

Why?

Because I refuse to write a story to GET the ship, that's simply wrong in my opinion.

I'd rather pick a ship with a Tag and ID that fit by themselves, something that doesn't require
"special approval" from the admin team and start building my story from there. A story may
"evolve" from something that doesn't require approval to something that does, not the other way around.

yes... but this sheet says nothing about TAGs ...hence my questions.

Says on the Pirate ID that they should use stuff from their faction... does it mean Civilian only?
It doesn't. So long as you can appease the requisites for racking some technology up from a peculiar outlaw group, you'd be fine.

SANKTION comes first, then story third

I mean, as a indie pirate you should choose who you will be aligned with. For example OC aligned people could use a Outcast gunboat. If you are *really* independant, then, the Zoner gunboat is your only option.

A brainwave occurs.

It would be very useful and would solve alot of problems if Indy pirates were only allowed to use smaller ships; Bombers and Fighters etc. It would reduce alot of the cap spam and make things strictly realistic. But i can see how this could bring out alot of rage in some people, namely indy pirates in cap ships.

To me it makes more sense that you write the story first if you're going to be requesting a ship that is purchased from a Guard system belonging to a faction. For example, if you wanted a Liberty Rogue Gunboat and you entered Cassini without first getting permission from the LR-, we'd blast you to pieces on sight. We'd also assume the ship was stolen if it was not being flown by someone with an LR ID/IFF or Molly ID/IFF, since the ship is only sold in the LR and Molly guard systems respectively.
I believe most Gunboats are now sold inside Guard systems.
