I've had this same ****ing problem with bitdefender on vista. I've posted in 5 different threads, and noone seems to be able to help. I've just about given up.

Make sure that you're at least running Vista Home Premium, and have 2GB of RAM on your machine. I can run FL in windowed mode with 3 open skype channels and FLAM to switch back and forth on accounts with no issues.
This on a $400 Compaq laptop that I spent $40 on the extra 1GB of RAM. Now, I DO have an Intel dual-core processor in it - the AMD processor doesn't like Vista very well.

A combo that works for me is vista freelancer and avira. Never had to do anything special to get it to work. Just installed all three and it ran fine.

I did also remove that protocol from the tcp/ip settings I was fairly thurough through all of Dboys suggestions. Avast! is listed as incompatable, AVG is a different animal. However it's the only thing I haven't tried yet. As soon as I find my product key, I will remove it and see what happens.
I am using a purchased cable modem, will see what those instructions lead to, will update when complete.

Ok after finding my cable modems addy/control page no joy there for double checking ports, and I wasn't going to pay for software to manipulate my ports for me... Down side..
Upside, uninstalled AVG.... it' flippin working.. AVG 8.5 has some issues...or needs some configuring that I haven't found yet.

Thought I was having other problems when getting kicked while I was docked...Was reading the books/story and server rules... The second time I noticed the text in background ...getting kicked for sitting to long at a dock... understand...still seems a bit short. Again Thanks all.

Ok one last update for other AVG users. I did a clean install of 8.5, custom install, unchecking surf shield. I loaded up the game was able to connect. FYI
