Being nice to each other - Agmen of Eladesor - 07-11-2009

Anyone that has had the pleasure (!) of trespassing in Omega-56 and running into the ship I have stationed there has met Abigail Hearns. (two points for knowing where I got the name, although my Abigail isn't like her namesake) She's very uptight, insulting, demanding, and will shoot you in RP as soon as look at you, because she takes her job of guarding that system VERY seriously.

Then after I deal with someone in RP, and I've had a couple people almost reduced to tears in system chat because they don't realize I'm RP'ing with them - I get into PM and we figure things out. I've had people not realize that I was RP'ing, and they thought I was just a heartless, cruel wench ready to make them eat space - which is quite amusing.

If you're referring to the BAF specifically then I'm afraid Stanley Nelson is genuinely nice and polite, sorry blunt. He's smart and loyal to the Crown, but I'm sure I have some screenshots of him offering a cup of tea to a murderous gaian pirate back last year.

The Foreign Secretary merely appears nice as he's a smart diplomat, whilst behind the scenes he is a scheming manipulator bent on Imperialist domination.

Oh, and my MI5 agent is completely heartless and would kill his own mother out of pure devotion to duty, plus he's quite paranoid.

I agree that we need more harsh egoistic human RP. But we need a few nice guys and smarmy polite people as well. Just think of Nelson as the counterbalance to Andrew Stuart; together we bring balance to Bretonia and prevent it from becoming all the same. There's plenty of mean characters around in Bretonia, I'm sure. The Bretonian Buccaneers are the latest example.

Both of our MI5s are heartless and immoral.. >.>

When you can get Blunt to compare your character to Hannibal 'freaking' Lector, you haz win.

(But something tells me this thread wasn't directed at me. But I'm gonna post anyway.)

Eh, Maitre, he's talking about pirates and other undesirables. It'd be kinda counter-productive for the representative governing body of Bretonia to be jerks to everyone that passes by.

On the contrary, it works perfectly. Our MI5s get crap done. Even if we are jerks to everyone and they hate us for it, they usually comply because they find out that we -will- blow them to pieces if they don't comply. Then, in the future, they seem to be more willing to comply with our wishes because they know from past experiences they can't talk their way out of it.

I agree with Bluntie (weird). I'm a jerk in character, and I do believe I have a right to be one. Anyone who says "Pirates should be more polite" or "Police should think about my case and let me go", er, no. Don't count on it. Sorry, but, that's the way Roleplaying is. You get into a role of your character and it goes as far as your character. Deal with it.

But it's in my nature to be nice, I'm a very friendly person. I just got taxed whilst I was making this post by a very polite Blood Dragon, how ironic...

Now give me 2 mil or i'll blast your head off, please.

I think the problem is people--on both sides of the fence--who can't distinguish their characters from themselves.
You can act mean and tough in-character without trying to "be the role". It doesn't have to be acted out as if it were real--this is still a game.

I do not know others, but in my case I try to be nice for 2 reasons:

1-Normally being nice helps convince the other person to do what you are asking.
2-Rules forbidd swearing. In order to avoid sanction, I never say anything that could resemble swearing.

To be honoest it would be nice to have a list of "swearing" words that can be used (Not sure if this has been discussed already ) or we could even have a list of RP-Swearing words.
For example instead of the "F" word we could use Frak.... etc

Are you serious?

Alright, let's set up a hypothetical situation. You're walking through a back alley of a city, and you get approached by one of the following:

Mugger 1:
Walks up, greets you with a nod or a smile, and says "Please give me your wallet and any valuables you have"

Mugger 2:
Sticks a gun in your face and says "Give me your wallet and valuables or I'll shoot you in the head"

Which one are you more likely to listen to?

EDIT:

BTW, you dont have to swear to be mean =P
