Freelancers Demanding Contraband - MB52 - 08-19-2009 Just avoid them... there are most definitely RP justifications possible. Next time try RPing with them a little, try and get their reasons out. It was posted. http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=44289 Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Andrew_Bonesovich - 08-19-2009 I belive I was the Freelancer you are complaining about, Red Phantom. If not, then its just a coincidence :P Anyway, Im honestly not sure about it. The ID can be interpreted in many ways. When your contract requires demanding contraband, then its fullfilling a bounty contract, which is allowed by the ID. I can stop doing that and stick to hunting Outcasts if Admins say I cant of course (interacting with most smugglers is a pain in the arse anyway) And Vigilante ID is a lot restrictive, I would need to change my RP a lot just because of all the restrictions. :( Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Alexander Draconis - 08-19-2009 I'm still hurting from the fact that any freelance character I play can't try to save slaves or stop a drug shipment because they think it's wrong; they have to officially join a law keeping faction according to pirates and smugglers. Freelancers aren't mercenaries; the big difference between the two has always been to me that mercs do things because of contracts, freelancers do things because of personal feelings. As was pointed out, there is no yes or no to demanding cargo in the ID text. I think Freelancers should be able to do so if they have a good reason or RP to back it up. Some may say this just opens the door to people being able to do whatever they want, whenever they want and how unbalancing it is. Truth be told, it makes sense: that's exactly what freelancers do. And they have to deal with the consequences of those actions. Like having unlawful bounties put on them. Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Quorg - 08-19-2009 Let's say my Freelancer is opposed to inter-house trade. Does that give him the right to demand cargo? I doubt it. Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Athenian - 08-19-2009 You smuggle slaves or drugs, there will be consequences. Accept that. If you think they are breaking rules, "talk to them" or "screenshot and report". If I may allow myself to voice my current favourite gripe: well, if most slave traffickers tried actually role-playing rather than abusing what is essentially 4.85's new power-trading, then you might get more sympathy from me. But seeing as this is just the kind of role-play deficient reaction seen far too frequently lately that actually served to discourage a few decent guys from playing on Disco, I shall instead chortle loudly at your misery. As for "oh I need to see a posted bounty", well, past experience has shown that even that isn't enough for people. If you want fair-play, play chess against yourself. If you want a consequence-free environment, watch the Teletubbies. Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Quorg - 08-19-2009 ' Wrote:You smuggle slaves or drugs, there will be consequences. Accept that. Believe me, I know more than anyone that smuggling has its consequences. Hell, I got ganked three times yesterday by three different groups within a half-hour time frame- with Capital 8 Armor. Didn't complain about it, though, because that's the nature of the game. Not to mention that getting chased is a lot of fun, and that being killed eventually is inevitable. But if you trade anything without a proper escort, there will be consequences. Does that mean it's okay for a Freelancer to demand "legal" cargo if his RP makes him opposed to it? Not to mention that getting chased is a lot of fun, and that being killed eventually is inevitable. Try it and see what happens. But see, you would be making a character to point out flaws in the rules rather than actually role-playing a part, which is what many people are doing as freelancers. Dealing with hypotheticals is pointless. As is reducing the argument to such an absurd level. We are talking drugs and slaves here. If the OP is inclined to think it is something that requires verification rules-wise, then report it and see. Drugs are bad, m'kay? Freelancers can do whatever their employer tells them to do. They had a contract with the Colonial Remnant which was necessary to be secret because of the Outcast treaty, and once the treaty was no more, the contract was posted on the forums. Despite repeated proof that what they were doing was in-RP, part of the community kept harassing them and rule lawyering them, with just technicalities in mind, and not RP. I frown on the situation, by the way. I won't go off topic, anyways. In short : -Freelancers can do what their employers tell them to do. -You sure they didn't just have Freelancer tags, but some other IDs? Freelancers Demanding Contraband - Alexander Draconis - 08-19-2009 ' Wrote:Let's say my Freelancer is opposed to inter-house trade. Does that give him the right to demand cargo? Actually, yeah, it does. It also gives you the right to run like heck when the law comes after you for it, and to lament the mistake when you realize you've alienated the local pirates and have no where to hide out and repair. Not to beat a dead horse, but I'll again state that freelancers aren't mercenaries. They can work for anyone for any reason if they can get the party at the table, yes. However, that does not mean they only act on contract and only act for current employers. Heck, some may be between gigs or aren't employed by factions at all. Some freelancers say "I work for myself." as Trent did in SP. They really can just decide their own operational parameters when not on a mission for someone else. They are the rugged individualist independents. As such, they can do what they want, and often must face the world alone when it comes to collect. At least this is what I was lead to believe the entire time I've played Freelancer. |
